Variations in the Mortality with Respect to Lunar Phases

Earth, Moon, and Planets, 1999
The overall mortality and cardiovascular mortality data from Romania within 1989–1995 were processed. They exhibit an increase by about 10% caused by the increase of inhabitants and by the increase of their average age. The percentage of cardiovascular mortality increases as well.

Bistability and phase variation in Salmonella enterica

Biochimica et Biophysica Acta (BBA) - Gene Regulatory Mechanisms, 2019
Cell-to-cell differences in bacterial gene expression can merely reflect the occurrence of noise. In certain cases, however, heterogeneous gene expression is a programmed event that results in bistable expression. If bistability is heritable, bacterial lineages are formed.

Biological Variation of Acute Phase Proteins

Annals of Clinical Biochemistry: International Journal of Laboratory Medicine, 1993
The analytical, within-subject and between-subject components of variation were estimated for serum albumin, transthyretin, α 1 -acid glycoprotein, α 1 -antichymotrypsin, haptoglobin, β 2 -microglobulin and C ...

Regularity for Double Phase Variational Problems

Archive for Rational Mechanics and Analysis, 2014
The authors examine a class of integral functionals originally connected to the homogenization theory, as well as the Lavrentiev phenomenon. The problems considered are non-uniformly elliptic, characterized by having non-standard growth conditions. \(P\), the primary functional which is considered, is also of great interest from the regularity theory ...

Variation on Zernike’s phase-contrast microscope

Applied Optics, 2000
We describe the design, construction, and testing of a variant of Zernike's phase-contrast microscope. The sample is illuminated with a white-light source through an annular aperture, which is projected onto the entrance pupil of the objective lens. In the return path the light diffracted by the sample and appearing in the interior of the objective's ...

Phase Variation of the mrp Fimbrial Promoter

2019
Mannose-resistant Proteus-like (MR/P) fimbriae, produced by the uropathogen Proteus mirabilis, are major contributors to urinary tract infection. Expression of mrp genes is controlled by an invertible element in the mrp operon promoter, and promoter orientation is controlled by a single recombinase, MrpI, which determines whether the element is in the ...

Anomalies of the Schwinger variational phase shifts

Physical Review A, 1990
The origin of certain anomalies of the Schwinger variational phase shifts in momentum space is investigated. It is demonstrated that these anomalies are related to the appearance of continuum bound states in the approximate calculation.
