Phase variations inBifidobacterium animalis

Current Microbiology, 1992
Strains isolated from rabbit, chicken, and rat feces and from sewage and fermented milk products, all identified as Bifidobacterium animalis, were found to show phase variations in colony appearance and in cellular morphology. The rate of transition in a switching system from opaque to transparent colonies and vice versa was determined.

Phase variation in Bartonella henselae

Microbiology, 2003
Bartonella henselae is a fastidious, Gram-negative bacterial pathogen of cats and humans. Previous workers have shown that serial passage in vitro leads to attenuation of virulence-associated attributes such as expression of pili, invasion of human epithelial cell lines and the stimulation of endothelial cell proliferation. In contrast to the published

Hypervariation and phase variation in the bacteriophage ‘resistome’

Current Opinion in Microbiology, 2007
Most bacteria encode proteins for defence against infection by bacteriophages. The mechanisms that bring about phage defence are extremely diverse, suggesting frequent independent evolution of novel processes. Phage defence determinants are often plasmid or phage-encoded and many that are chromosomal show evidence of lateral transfer. Recent studies on

Fimbrial phase variation: stochastic or cooperative?

Current Genetics, 2015
Surface fimbriae of pathogenic Escherichia coli facilitate sensing, adhesion and even invasion of host epithelial cells. While it is known that the pathogen has the potential to express a plethora of fimbrial variants susceptible to rapid phase ON/OFF variation, it is an open question if the fimbrial diversity seen at the population level is the ...

Regularity for Double Phase Variational Problems

Archive for Rational Mechanics and Analysis, 2014
The authors examine a class of integral functionals originally connected to the homogenization theory, as well as the Lavrentiev phenomenon. The problems considered are non-uniformly elliptic, characterized by having non-standard growth conditions. \(P\), the primary functional which is considered, is also of great interest from the regularity theory ...

A Variational Principle for Scattering Phases

Proceedings of the Physical Society, 1960
A first-order variational principle for a stationary scattering phase is obtained by keeping constant the energy normalization for permitted variations of the wave function. The principle is used to derive (i) a variational correction to the phase obtained from given approximate wave functions, (ii) a first-order perturbation theory, (iii) a first Born

Phase Variation: Evolution of a Controlling Element

Science, 1980
Phase variation in bacteria is regulated by homologous recombination at a specific DNA site. This recombinational event causes the inversion of a 970-base-pair DNA sequence that includes the promoter necessary for transcription of a flagellar gene.

Variations of the phase-only filter

Conference Proceedings., IEEE International Conference on Systems, Man and Cybernetics, 2003
Summary form only given, as follows. An alternative to the classical method filter, namely the phase-only filter, is shown to be useful for pattern recognition and image correlation. It exhibits extremely narrow correlation peaks with very small sidelobes, better discrimination between similar objects, and 100% throughput when implemented optically ...

Phase variation of lipopolysaccharide in Haemophilus influenzae

Research in Microbiology, 1991
Lipopolysaccharide (LPS) structures on Haemophilus influenzae, defined by monoclonal antibodies, can show phase variation from generation to generation. Several genetic loci are involved in LPS biosynthesis by H. influenzae. In this paper, we describe three loci which play a role in LPS phase variation: the lic loci; lic1 and lic3 have been sequenced ...

Biological Variation of Acute Phase Proteins

Annals of Clinical Biochemistry: International Journal of Laboratory Medicine, 1993
The analytical, within-subject and between-subject components of variation were estimated for serum albumin, transthyretin, α 1 -acid glycoprotein, α 1 -antichymotrypsin, haptoglobin, β 2 -microglobulin and C ...
