Tonic and phasic differential GABAergic inhibition of synaptic actions of joint afferents in the cat

Experimental Brain Research, 2006
The aim of this study was to examine the functional organization of the spinal neuronal networks activated by myelinated afferent fibers in the posterior articular nerve (PAN) of the anesthetized cat. Particular attention was given to the tonic and phasic GABAa inhibitory modulation of these networks.

Cellular Mechanisms Underlying Magnesium Sulfate Inhibition of Phasic Myometrial Contractions

Biochemical and Biophysical Research Communications, 1998
These studies sought to test the hypothesis that magnesium inhibits extracellular calcium entry, thereby inhibiting intracellular calcium release and cytosolic calcium oscillations in myometrial smooth muscle. In vitro contraction studies were performed using oxytocin and other uterotonic agonists with and without the addition of magnesium in the ...

Phasic EMG inhibition and spinal reflex modulation during synchronized sleep in the cat

Experimental Neurology, 1975
Abstract Phasic inhibition of the neck or submental musculature during bursts of eye movements (man and cat) and lateral geniculate spikes (cat) during desynchronized sleep is accompanied by spinal monosynaptic reflex inhibition. Phasic EMG suppressions also occur during synchronized sleep in both species, and in man these suppressions are ...

Tonic pain inhibits phasic pain: Evoked cerebral potential correlates in man

Psychiatry Research, 1985
In a sample of 10 healthy volunteers phasic pain ratings and evoked cerebral potentials (EPs) elicited by brief electrical skin stimuli were investigated in periods before, during, and after contralateral tonic ischemia pain. In all subjects the phasic pain ratings and the late EP components P80-N150 and N150-P260 were depressed under concurrent tonic ...
