Combination of antiseizure medications phenobarbital, ketamine, and midazolam reduces soman‐induced epileptogenesis and brain pathology in rats

open access: yesEpilepsia Open, 2021
Objective Cholinergic‐induced status epilepticus (SE) is associated with a loss of synaptic gamma‐aminobutyric acid A receptors (GABAAR) and an increase in N‐methyl‐D‐aspartate receptors (NMDAR) and amino‐3‐hydroxy‐5‐methyl‐4‐isoxazolepropionic acid ...

Behavioral and structural changes in the hippocampus of wistar epileptic rats are minimized by acupuncture associated or not with phenobarbital

open access: yesArquivo Brasileiro de Medicina Veterinária e Zootecnia, 2022
The aim of this study was to analyze the behavior and histopathological changes in the hippocampus of epileptic Wistar rats treated with acupuncture associated or not with phenobarbital.

In vitro Removal of Therapeutic Drugs with a Novel Adsorbent System [PDF]

open access: yes, 2002
Background/Aim: Substances in the middle molecular weight range have been shown to play a significant pathogenetic role in as diverse disorders as end-stage renal disease and multiple organ failure.

Phenobarbital Molecularly Imprinted Polymer Selectively Binds Phenobarbital.

open access: yesBiological and Pharmaceutical Bulletin, 1997
Molecularly imprinted polymer (MIP) was prepared against phenobarbital using methacrylic acid as the functional monomer and ethylene glycol dimethacrylate as the cross linking monomer. We analyzed the recognition properties of the phenobarbital MIP. In some organic solvents, imprinted polymer showed selective binding to phenobarbital.

MicroRNA-122 down-regulation is involved in phenobarbital-mediated activation of the constitutive androstane receptor. [PDF]

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2012
Constitutive androstane receptor (CAR) is a nuclear receptor that regulates the transcription of target genes, including CYP2B and 3A. Phenobarbital activates CAR, at least in part, in an AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK)-dependent manner. However, the

Time and dose-dependent effects of phenobarbital on the rat liver miRNAome. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
In a previous study we had shown that treatment of male Fischer rats with exogenous chemicals for three months resulted in prominent, mode-of-action dependent effects on liver microRNA (miRNA) (Koufaris et al., 2012). Here we investigated how the effects

Phenobarbital: missing in action

open access: yesBulletin of the World Health Organization, 2012
Epilepsy affects more than 60 million people worldwide, and over 80% of them live in resource-poor countries.1 Approximately 85% of these people do not receive appropriate treatment2 because of economic, cultural, social and legislative barriers, compounded by little interest on the part of pharmaceutical companies because drug distribution is not ...

Short-Term Neurodevelopmental Outcome in Term Neonates Treated with Phenobarbital versus Levetiracetam: A Single-Center Experience [PDF]

open access: yes, 2019
BACKGROUND: Phenobarbital (PB) has been traditionally used as the first-line treatment for neonatal seizures. More recently, levetiracetam (LEV) has been increasingly used as a promising newer antiepileptic medication for treatment of seizures in ...

A clinical trial of enteral Levetiracetam for acute seizures in pediatric cerebral malaria

open access: yesBMC Pediatrics, 2019
Background Acute seizures are common in pediatric cerebral malaria (CM), but usual care with phenobarbital risks respiratory suppression. We undertook studies of enteral levetiracetam (eLVT) to evaluate pharmacokinetics (PK), safety and efficacy ...

Microbial Metabolism and Inhibition Studies of Phenobarbital [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
Purpose: Screening scale studies were performed with eight cultures for their ability to metabolize phenobarbital, an antiepileptic, sedative, hypnotic and substrate for CYP 2C9 and 2C19.Methods: The transformation of phenobarbital was confirmed and ...
