Cell division and migration in a 'genotype' for neural networks [PDF]

open access: yes, 1994
Much research has been dedicated recently to applying genetic algorithms to populations of neural networks. However, while in real organisms the inherited genotype maps in complex ways into the resulting phenotype, in most of this research the ...

Unidirectional response to bidirectional selection on body size II. Quantitative genetics

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, 2020
Anticipating the genetic and phenotypic changes induced by natural or artificial selection requires reliable estimates of trait evolvabilities (genetic variances and covariances). However, whether or not multivariate quantitative genetics models are able

The saprotrophic Pleurotus ostreatus species complex: late Eocene origin in East Asia, multiple dispersal, and complex speciation

open access: yesIMA Fungus, 2020
The Pleurotus ostreatus species complex is saprotrophic and of significant economic and ecological importance. However, species delimitation has long been problematic because of phenotypic plasticity and morphological stasis.

The early evolution of rhynchosaurs

open access: yesFrontiers in Ecology and Evolution, 2016
The rhynchosaurian archosauromorphs are an important and diverse group of fossil tetrapods that first appeared during the Early Triassic and probably became extinct during the early Late Triassic (early Norian).

Direct-from-sputum rapid phenotypic drug susceptibility test for mycobacteria.

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2020
BackgroundThe spread of multi-drug resistant tuberculosis (MDR-TB) is a leading global public-health challenge. Because not all biological mechanisms of resistance are known, culture-based (phenotypic) drug-susceptibility testing (DST) provides important

Pregnancy Obstructs Involution Stage II of the Mammary Gland in Cows: General Biological Implications [PDF]

open access: yes, 2007
*Background* Repeated research findings over the last 4 decades show that involution of mammary glands in dairy cows did not regress to same extend as that noticed in other mammalian species. *Methodology/Principal Findings ...

Magnetic Micro‐ and Nanorobots for Precision Thrombolysis: Design Strategies and Translational Challenges

open access: yesAdvanced Robotics Research, EarlyView.
Micro‐ and nanorobots for targeted thrombolysis. This perspective elaborates on the clinical indication of blood clot disorders and current limitations for treatment. As a novel, alternative solution, micro‐ and nanorobots can be used to treat and break down thrombi.

Fixation of genetic variation and optimization of gene expression: The speed of evolution in isolated lizard populations undergoing Reverse Island Syndrome [PDF]

open access: yes, 2019
The ecological theory of island biogeography suggests that mainland populations should be more genetically divergent from those on large and distant islands rather than from those on small and close islets.

Cascade‐Responsive MXene@Cu‐MOF Heterostructure Integrates Antioxidant Activity, Infection Control, and Vascularization for Tracheal Repair

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
A cascade‐responsive MXene@Cu‐MOF/GelMA hydrogel is engineered as a “skeleton–backpack” platform for extensive tracheal repair. The MXene framework scavenges postoperative ROS and converts NIR light into mild hyperthermia, while the Cu‐MOF component provides pH/NIR‐responsive Cu2+ dosing for infection control, angiogenesis, and chondrogenesis.
