Journal of Philosophy of EducationAbstract Euphemia Lofton Haynes was a renowned mathematician and mathematics educator, and notably the first Black American woman to complete a PhD in mathematics, which was not widely known until the late 20th century and early 21st century. Even less well known are her interactions with the philosophy of logic and mathematics.

2008Abstract We consider the field of enquiry called ethnomathematics and its role within the philosophy of mathematics (education). We elaborate on the shifted meaning of the concept "ethnomathematics". Until the early 1980s, it was reserved for the mathematical practices of 'nonliterate' -formerly labeled as 'primitive'- peoples (Ascher and Ascher, 1986).
