Sustainable approach in phlorotannin recovery from macroalgae
In this present study, alcohol/salt liquid biphasic system was used to extract phlorotannin from brown macroalgae. Liquid biphasic system is a new green technology that integrated with various processes into one-step, by concentrating, separating and purifying the bioproduct in a unit operation.

Pharmacological Applications of Phlorotannins: A Comprehensive Review
Current Drug Discovery Technologies, 2021Background: Seaweeds, including marine brown algae, are traditional food sources in Asia. Phlorotannins, as the product of the polyketide pathway, are mainly found in brown algae. Different properties have been attributed to this group of marine products ranging from antiallergic to anticancer activity. Mechanism of action is not obvious for all these

Phlorotannin-protein interactions
Journal of Chemical Ecology, 1996Tannins are one of the most broadly distributed types of plant secondary compounds, and have been the focal point for many studies of plant/herbivore interactions. Tannins interact strongly with proteins, so that the fate and effects of ingested tannins are in part dependent on the mode of interaction of the tannin with dietary and endogenous proteins ...

Phlorotannins: A review on biosynthesis, chemistry and bioactivity
Food Bioscience, 2021Abstract Phlorotannins are polyphenolic compounds mostly found in brown seaweed and are comprised of polymeric chains of phloroglucinol residues (1,3,5-trihydroxybenzene) connected via C–C and/or C–O–C couplings. Due to the presence of highly complex polymeric mixtures of structural and conformational isomers of phlorotannins and the absence of ...
