The Energetic Cost of Activation of White Muscle Fibres from the Dogfish Scyliophinus Canicula [PDF]

open access: yes, 1997
Link to the publisher's site: http://jeb.biologists.org/The energetic cost of activation was measured during an isometric tetanus of white muscle fibres from the dogfish Scyliorhinus canicula.

Dietary nitrate supplementation mitigates age‐related changes at the neuromuscular junction in mice

open access: yesThe Journal of Physiology, EarlyView.
Abstract figure legend Ageing is associated with a decline in muscle mass and strength, namely sarcopenia, significantly impacting the quality of life in older individuals. Different strategies are being explored to counteract these detrimental effects. In the present study, we investigated a non‐invasive nutritional approach: the impact of 2 months of

Potassium homeostasis during disease progression of Alzheimer's disease

open access: yesThe Journal of Physiology, EarlyView.
Abstract figure legend Schematic diagram depicting astrocytic potassium (K+) clearance in the hippocampus of healthy brain (left) and during progression of Alzheimer's disease. Reduced conductivity through Kir channels and gap junctions in hippocampal astrocytes impair their ability to clear K+ from the extracellular milleu, which results in a ...

Blue plaque review series: A.V. Hill, athletic records and the birth of exercise physiology

open access: yesThe Journal of Physiology, Volume 603, Issue 6, Page 1361-1374, 15 March 2025.
Abstract figure legend Depiction of the world running records from 1925 studied by A. V. Hill and those of 2025 up to and including ultradistance events on a semi‐logarithmic plot. These records, in turn, have a clear bioenergetic basis [as shown in the plot of oxygen uptake against time, with blue circles showing exercise performed below ‘critical ...

Mitochondrial haplotype and sex modulate responses to endurance exercise training

open access: yesThe Journal of Physiology, EarlyView.
Abstract figure legend Using OKC‐HETB/W rats we demonstrate that mitochondrial haplotype influences training responses of endurance exercise. Overall OKC‐HETW rats showed greater responses than OKC‐HETB in exercise tolerance, mitochondrial bioenergetics, mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) mutation frequencies and motor co‐ordination.
