Severe steroidogenic and spermatogenic alterations are reported in association with diabetic manifestations in humans and experimental animals. This study was planned to determine whether oxidative stress is involved in diabetes-induced alterations in the testes. Diabetes was induced in male rats by injection of 50 mg/kg of streptozotocin (STZ).

A comparative study has been carried out on the general reactivity of lipid hydroperoxides in liposomes, biological membranes and lipoproteins with two Se-dependent peroxidases: Glutathione Peroxidase (GPX) and Phospholipid Hydroperoxide Glutathione Peroxidase (PHGPX).

Putative phospholipid hydroperoxide glutathione peroxidase from Antrodia camphorata
Food Chemistry, 2009Abstract Glutathione Peroxidases (GPxs) play important roles in antioxidation. A cDNA (Ac-PHGPx, 764 bp) encoding a putative phospholipid hydroperoxide glutathione peroxidase (PHGPx) from Antrodia camphorata has been cloned. The deduced amino acid sequence is conserved among the reported GPxs.

Glutathione peroxidases are considered essential for the prevention of lipid peroxidation in biomembranes (1). Whereas the “classical” tetrameric Glutathione peroxidases (GPX) only reduce hydroperoxy fatty acids previously cleaved from phospholipids by phospholipases, a monomeric variant called phospholipid hydroperoxide glutathione peroxidase (PHGPX ...

A Selenium‐Containing Phospholipid‐Hydroperoxide Glutathione Peroxidase in Schistosoma mansoni
European Journal of Biochemistry, 1996The 1000000×g supernatant of the parasite platyhelminth Schistosoma mansoni exhibits a glutathione peroxidase activity with the substrate phosphatidylcholine hydroperoxide. Purification yielded a protein of 20 kDa molecular mass both on gel filtration column chromatography and SDS/PAGE, thus suggesting that S. mansoni expresses a protein similar to the

Molecular characterization of phospholipid hydroperoxide glutathione peroxidases from Hydra vulgaris
Gene, 2006Apparent full-length cDNA sequences coding respectively for mitochondrial (HvGPx41) and nuclear (HvGPx42) phospholipid hydroperoxide glutathione peroxidase were isolated from Hydra vulgaris. The cDNA sequences share total identity in their 3'-end and differ in their 5'-end.

Phospholipid hydroperoxide glutathione peroxidase (PHGPX) and classical glutathione peroxidase (GPX1) are encoded by separate genes with only about 40% amino acid and nucleic acid sequence identity. To determine the response of tissue PHGPX expression to dietary Se level and to compare these responses with those for GPX1, weanling male rats were fed ...

Phospholipid hydroperoxide glutathione peroxidase (PHGPx) is a selenoprotein, which protects biomembranes from oxidative damage, and accounts for most of the selenium content in the mammalian testis. There are at least three different variants of this protein: cytosolic, mitochondrial and nuclear.

Phospholipid hydroperoxide glutathione peroxidase (PHGPx): more than an antioxidant enzyme?
Biomedical and environmental sciences : BES, 1997The family of glutathione peroxidases encompasses, as far, three tetrameric glutathione peroxidases (GPx) and the monomeric PHGPx. Although the overall homology between tetrameric enzymes and PHGPx is less than 30%, a pronounced similarity has been detected on clusters involved in the active site and a common catalytic triad (selenocysteine glutamine ...
