Under the cover of darkness: Foraging behaviour increases on cloudy, new moon nights in a pelagic seabird

open access: yesIbis, EarlyView.
While many visual predators feed exclusively during the day, others exploit foraging opportunities at night, although the efficiency with which they do so is strongly influenced by ambient light levels. We investigated the influence of variation in nocturnal light on the foraging behaviour of a small pelagic seabird, the European Storm‐petrel ...

Distinctive gene expression in the reduced first thoracic legs of a nymphalid butterfly

open access: yesInsect Molecular Biology, EarlyView.
Transcriptome analysis reveals that the small non‐walking front legs of a butterfly have distinct gene expression to the four walking legs. Reduced front legs express a gene with putative mechanosensory roles, a blue‐sensitive opsin and two homeobox genes.

Assessing Color Inconstancy of CAD/CAM Materials: Influence of CIE White LED Illuminants and Substrate Shade

open access: yesJournal of Esthetic and Restorative Dentistry, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Objective To assess how the CIE white LED illuminants and substrate shade impact the color inconstancy of high‐translucency CAD/CAM materials. Materials and Methods From the spectral reflectance factors of Lava Ultimate‐LU, Grandio blocks‐GB, VITA Enamic‐VE, and VITA Mark II‐M specimens (n = 3/material) measured on nine background shades (ND1 ...

Ocular Manifestations of Infectious Salmon Anaemia Virus Infection in Atlantic Salmon (Salmo salar)

open access: yesJournal of Fish Diseases, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Eyes are essential sensory organs needed by teleost Atlantic salmon for high visual acuity and survival in both the wild and in aquaculture settings. In this work, we assessed the ocular manifestations of Infectious Salmon Anaemia Virus (ISAV) infection in Atlantic salmon by a cohabitation‐mediated infection assay and histological and ...

PtoHY5 integrates photoperiodic signals with the ABA pathway to coordinate growth cessation and dormancy in Populus

open access: yesJournal of Integrative Plant Biology, EarlyView.
In Populus, short days deactivate the growth‐promoting protein PtoHY5, turning off a growth accelerator and activating an abscisic acid‐driven brake. This directly couples growth cessation with dormancy, underscoring the role of abscisic acid in synchronizing these transitions for winter survival.
