The basis of the duplex theory of vision is examined in view of the dazzling array of data on visual pigment sequences and the pigments they form, on the microspectrophotometry measurements of single photoreceptor cells, on the kinds of photoreceptor cascade enzymes, and on the electrophysiological properties of photoreceptors.

Photoreceptor proteins enable living organisms to sense light and transduce this signal into biochemical outputs to elicit appropriate cellular responses. Their light sensing is typically mediated by covalently or noncovalently bound molecules called chromophores, which absorb light of specific wavelengths and modulate protein structure and biological ...

Publisher Summary This chapter describes the responses of photoreceptors. Visual pigments are contained in specialized nerve cells, the photoreceptors, that have the ability to transform light into an electrical signal. It is observed that light adaptation decreases sensitivity, while it increases temporal resolution.

Annelid Ciliary Photoreceptors
Science, 1965The photoreceptor cells of the tube-dwelling polychaete Branchiomma vesiculosum contain stacked disc-shaped membranous sacs which are the expanded and flattened outer membranes of cilia.

The rod and cone cells of the retina are thought to mediate all of the light responses of the vertebrate eye. But here we show that salmon vertebrate ancient (VA) opsin forms a functional photopigment in vitro, and is expressed in a subset of retinal horizontal and amacrine cells in vivo.

With age many retinal neurons are lost. In humans the rod photoreceptor population in the perimacular region is subject to approximately 30% loss over life. Those that remain have been reported to suffer from extensive convolutions and localized swellings of their outer segments abnormally increasing their disc content and outer segment length ...

Human photoreceptor topography
Journal of Comparative Neurology, 1990AbstractWe have measured the spatial density of cones and rods in eight wholemounted human retinas, obtained from seven individuals between 27 and 44 years of age, and constructed maps of photoreceptor density and between‐individual variability. The average human retina contains 4.6 million cones (4.08–5.29 million).
