Dimethylcethrene: A Chiroptical Diradicaloid Photoswitch

open access: yesJournal of the American Chemical Society, 2018
We describe the synthesis and properties of 13,14-dimethylcethrene, a prototype of a chiral diradicaloid photochemical switch that can be transformed reversibly via conrotatory electrocyclization to its more stable closed form by light (630 nm) or heat ...

Bifunctional Molecular Switches in Fused Diarylethene–Rhodamine Systems

open access: yesChemPhotoChem, EarlyView.
Spectroscopic and time‐dependent density‐functional theory studies show that these novel rhodamine‐based diarylethene (DAE) compounds display intense UV absorption, undergo reversible two‐step protonation involving triazole and rhodamine units, and respond selectively to acid, base, and metal ions.

Sensitized Disequilibration of Water‐Soluble Azopolymers

open access: yesAngewandte Chemie, Volume 138, Issue 7, 9 February 2026.
Disequilibration by sensitization under confinement (DESC) is a promising strategy for efficient visible‐light‐induced azobenzene E→Z isomerization. In this article, we explored key factors for adapting DESC to azopolymers, eventually achieving efficiencies up to 85% compared to direct excitation and laying the foundation for more complex systems ...

Potent hemithioindigo-based antimitotics photocontrol the microtubule cytoskeleton in cellulo

open access: yesBeilstein Journal of Organic Chemistry, 2020
Background: Hemithioindigo is a promising molecular photoswitch that has only recently been applied as a photoswitchable pharmacophore for control over bioactivity in cellulo. Uniquely, in contrast to other photoswitches that have been applied to biology,

Status of fiberoptics technology for propulsion control systems [PDF]

open access: yes
Optical sensors and optically controlled actuators for use in airbreathing engine control systems are discussed. The environmental conditions in which the aircraft will operate require the fiberoptic cables and optical connectors to perform reliably at ...

Machine Learning–Enhanced Fluorescence Cryptography with NADH‐Responsive Polymer Dots

open access: yesENERGY &ENVIRONMENTAL MATERIALS, EarlyView.
This study presents a smart anticounterfeiting system using semiconducting polymer dots (Pdots) that exhibit tunable fluorescence responses to NADH. By integrating these dynamic optical signals with machine learning–based decoding, the work establishes a secure and intelligent encryption platform, showing a novel strategy that links chemical sensing ...

The role of alkyl substituents in deazaadenine-based diarylethene photoswitches

open access: yesBeilstein Journal of Organic Chemistry, 2016
Diarylethenes are an important class of reversible photoswitches and often claimed to require two alkyl substituents at the carbon atoms between which the bond is formed or broken in the electrocyclic rearrangement.

Hydrogels Incorporating Donor–Acceptor Stenhouse Adducts as a Platform for Photoinduced, On‐Off Switchable Release of Small Molecule Cargos

open access: yesMacromolecular Rapid Communications, EarlyView.
Donor–acceptor Stenhouse aDdducts (DASAs) are known for their photoinduced tautomerization, which, when conjugated to block copolymers, can self‐assemble into tuneable polymersomes. These DASA‐polymersomes are being investigated for light‐controlled cargo release in biomedical applications.

A Phytochrome-Derived Photoswitch for Intracellular Transport

open access: yesACS Synthetic Biology, 2017
Cells depend on the proper positioning of their organelles, suggesting that active manipulation of organelle positions can be used to explore spatial cell biology and to restore cellular defects caused by organelle misplacement.
