Biochar and K‐fertigation modulate stomatal behaviour, ion homeostasis and water use efficiency in waxy maize seedlings under salt stress

open access: yesJournal of Agronomy and Crop Science, Volume 212, Issue 6, November 2026.
Efficacy of wheat straw biochar in alleviating salt stress under K‐fertigation via improved photosynthesis, water use efficiency and ion homeostasis in waxy maize. ABSTRACT K‐fertigation and soil amendment could ameliorate the adverse effects of saline stress on C4 crop physiology and performance, yet the underlying mechanisms remained largely elusive.

Evolution in arid environments: the role of betalains, succulence, and medullary bundles

open access: yesNew Phytologist, Volume 252, Issue 3, Page 1250-1268, November 2026.
Overview of the study system. Summary The flowering plant clade Caryophyllales includes many succulent species that grow in drought conditions. Many Caryophyllales species also have betalain pigmentation and medullary bundles, both of which have been linked to stress tolerance, albeit with less precise functional characterisation.

Hyperspectral Remote Sensing Unveils Phytoplankton Succession in Hurricane Wakes

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, Volume 53, Issue 19, 16 October 2026.
Abstract Hyperspectral satellite data from the NASA mission, PACE (Plankton, Aerosol, Cloud, ocean Ecosystem), can be used to investigate the effects of hurricanes on phytoplankton composition. Results from four Atlantic Ocean hurricanes show the expected increases in chlorophyll‐a concentration associated with deepening of the mixed layer depth (MLD).

AVA‐MAPbI3 Cap‐and‐Root Islands on Mesoporous TiO2 Toward Neutral‐Color Semi‐Transparent Perovskite Solar Cells in Agrivoltaics

open access: yesAdvanced Energy and Sustainability Research, Volume 7, Issue 10, October 2026.
Photograph and scanning electron microscopy images of semi‐transparent AVA‐MAPbI3 cap‐and‐root islands in mesoporous TiO2. The spectrally neutral light transmitted by this architecture benefits agrivoltaic applications such as lettuce cultivation while maintaining a positive energy balance to meet annual greenhouse demands for lighting, irrigation, and

On evolution of the photosynthetic pigments

Space Life Sciences, 1973
Some considerations on the origin of the photosynthetic pigment apparatus in the period of transition of organisms from heterotrophic to phototrophic mode of life and further evolution of this apparatus are given in this paper. Some ideas about interrelation between ‘major’ and ‘auxiliary’ pigments and about different forms of the pigments in vivo are ...

Photosynthetic pigments in the Haptophyta

1994
Abstract Knowledge of pigment systems is essential to our understanding of taxonomic and biological relationships within algal groups, and is an important parameter for measuring their abundance in aquatic systems. In this paper we review the development of knowledge of haptophyte pigments from the early 1960s to the late 1980s, and ...

On the evolution of the photosynthetic pigments

Origins of Life, 1975
During the course of terrestrial evolution, some organisms developed the capability of capturing and utilizing solar radiation. Colored compounds were undoubtedly incorporated within living forms from the earliest times, but during the transition from heterotrophic to a photoautotrophic metabolism only those pigments were selected that were components ...

Fullerenes linked to photosynthetic pigments

Research on Chemical Intermediates, 1997
The synthesis and photochemical characterization of two porphyrin-fullerene dyads, two zinc porphyrin-fullerene dyads, and a carotenobuckminsterfullerene are reviewed. In these molecules, the fullerene first excited singlet state may be formed by direct excitation or by singlet-singlet energy transfer from the attached pigment.

Measuring Photosynthetic Pigments

1992
The concentration of photosynthetic pigments is commonly used as a measure of the amount of plant material in a sample (Cullen, 1982), and photosynthesis rates are frequently normalized to chlorophyll a concentration (Jassby and Platt, 1976). In addition, assessments of pigment composition provides qualitative information on the physiological condition
