Effects of Spirulina Enrichment on Bread Quality: Color, Texture, Volatile, and Sensory Properties

open access: yesFood Science &Nutrition, Volume 14, Issue 9, September 2026.
This study explored how the addition of 1%–2% Spirulina powder affects bread quality, focusing on color, texture, volatile compounds, and sensory characteristics. Spirulina mainly influenced bread color and volatile profile, while texture remained largely unchanged. The enriched samples also showed more pronounced bitter and marine notes.

A dual role of phycoerythrin in the nitrogen‐fixing cyanobacterium Crocosphaera watsonii: From light‐harvesting to nitrogen reservoir

open access: yesLimnology and Oceanography Letters, Volume 11, Issue 5, September 2026.
Abstract Unicellular diazotrophic cyanobacteria contribute up to ~50% of marine N2 fixation, and Crocosphaera watsonii, characterized by high phycoerythrin (PE) content, is among one of the key species in tropical and subtropical oceans. Although recent observations have revealed heterogeneous N2 fixation activity within C.

Evolutionary insights into bilin biosynthesis: Functional characterization of pre‐PcyA enzymes

open access: yesProtein Science, Volume 35, Issue 9, September 2026.
Abstract Biosynthesis of the linear tetrapyrrole phycocyanobilin (PCB) by the ferredoxin‐dependent bilin reductase (FDBR) PcyA is essential for light‐harvesting and regulatory processes in diverse photosynthetic organisms, yet its evolutionary origins are not fully understood. PcyA evolved from pre‐PcyA proteins found in diverse bacteria.

CurT dosage quantitatively affects thylakoid structure and PSII performance in Synechocystis sp. PCC 6803

open access: yesThe Plant Journal, Volume 127, Issue 6, September 2026.
SUMMARY The photosynthetic thylakoid membrane systems of many oxygenic photosynthesizers form elaborate three‐dimensional structures. Curvature Thylakoid (CurT/CURT1) proteins are central regulators of thylakoid architecture in cyanobacteria and plants, driving both grana stacking and the formation of thylakoid convergence zones (TCZs) by promoting ...
