Designing the Future of Food: Challenges to Innovation in Microalgae‐Derived Blue Protein Systems

open access: yesSustainable Food Proteins, Volume 4, Issue 1, March 2026.
This image illustrates the key factors in protein extraction from microalgae, along with the main sustainability opportunities and associated risks. ABSTRACT Microalgae are emerging as promising sources of “blue proteins,” a term used to categorize aquatic proteins derived from marine and freshwater organisms.

Progress in biosynthesis of phycobiliprotein [PDF]

open access: yesChinese Science Bulletin, 2018
Photosynthesis has existed on the earth for about 4 billion years, and the photosynthetic organisms have emerged with the production of photosynthesis. In order to effectively capture light energy and adapt their living environment, algae and higher plants have evolved different light-harvesting antenna systems during the long evolution, one is the ...

Microalgae Techno‐Functional Properties in Bread, Cookies, and Pasta Products: A Review

open access: yesComprehensive Reviews in Food Science and Food Safety, Volume 25, Issue 2, March 2026.
ABSTRACT Microalgae are gaining increasing attention in the food industry not only for their nutritional richness but also for their promising techno‐functional properties. Research shows that isolated compounds from microalgae exhibit excellent techno‐functional properties as emulsifiers and thickeners, sometimes outperforming commercial additives ...

Fluorescent proteins: A journey from the cell to extreme environments in material science

open access: yesPhotochemistry and Photobiology, Volume 102, Issue 2, Page 290-302, March/April 2026.
Applications of proteins and microorganisms as tools or effectors in material science. Abstract This review presents the progression from the use of fluorescent proteins (FPs) and chromoproteins as bioimaging labels and sensors to the strategic engineering of their properties for robust functionality in synthetic and non‐biological environments ...

Safety evaluation of blue galdieria extract as a food additive

open access: yesEFSA Journal, Volume 24, Issue 3, March 2026.
Abstract The EFSA Panel on Food Additive and Flavourings (FAF Panel) provides a scientific opinion on the safety of blue galdieria extract as a food additive. Blue galdieria extract is an enzymatically treated C‐phycocyanin extract derived from the lysed biomass of the microalgae Galdieria sulphuraria.

Photon‐to‐Heat Energy Harvesting Fluorescent Protein Coatings for Thermoelectrics

open access: yesAdvanced Science, Volume 13, Issue 8, 9 February 2026.
Fluorescent proteins (FPs) are used in light‐absorbing coatings on thermoelectric generators (TEGs) to convert light into heat and generate electricity. By tuning the properties of FP‐doped polymer matrices, photothermal efficiencies of up to 48% have been achieved.

Nutritional Composition of Seven Selected Seaweed Species Commonly Available in Bangladesh: A Systematic Review and Meta‐Analysis

open access: yeseFood, Volume 7, Issue 1, February 2026.
Nutritional Composition of Seven Selected Seaweed Available in Bangladesh ABSTRACT This study systematically reviewed macronutrients, micronutrients, and potential health risks associated with heavy metals in seaweed. The selected seaweed species contained considerable protein (approximately 15–20 g/100 g dry weight), ash (approximately 15–28 g/100 g),

Influence of Critical Parameters on the Extraction of Concentrated C-PE from Thermotolerant Cyanobacteria

open access: yesBioTech
This work aimed to identify the influence of pH, molarity, w/v fraction, extraction time, agitation, and either a sodium (Na2HPO4·7H2O-NaH2PO4·H2O) or potassium buffer (K2HPO4-KH2PO4) used in the extraction of C-phycoerythrin (C-PE) from a thermotolerant

Algal Proteins: Extraction, Application, and Challenges Concerning Production

open access: yesFoods, 2017
Population growth combined with increasingly limited resources of arable land and fresh water has resulted in a need for alternative protein sources. Macroalgae (seaweed) and microalgae are examples of under-exploited “crops”.
