Epitypification of Merismopedia tranquilla (Cyanobacteria) prompts phylogenetic reassessment of the genus and the description of two morphologically similar genera

open access: yesJournal of Phycology, EarlyView.
Abstract The genus Merismopedia is morphologically characterized by its distinctive colony arrangement yet exhibits considerable variability among species. Recent studies suggested that Merismopedia is polyphyletic, and its most likely true lineage was provisionally placed within the Microcystaceae. However, the available molecular data for most of the

Genomic and secondary metabolites of the marine cyanobacterium Capilliphycus salinus ALCB114379

open access: yesJournal of Phycology, EarlyView.
Abstract Assembling high‐quality genomes from underexplored environments can be helpful for understanding microbial diversity and identifying novel species. The Cyanobacterium type strain Capilliphycus salinus ALCB114379 is a representative of Oscillatoriales order isolated from a supralittoral zone of the south Atlantic Ocean in Brazil, an ecotone ...

Organelle genome evolution in the early‐diverging brown algal lineage, Ishigeales

open access: yesJournal of Phycology, EarlyView.
Abstract The order Ishigeales is an early‐diverging lineage of brown algae that exhibits remarkable morphological diversity ranging from simple filamentous forms to robust terete and foliose thalli, which may reflect complex evolutionary histories in their organelle genomes.

Refining generic limits in Hyacinthinae (Asparagaceae, Scilloideae): Conflict and concordance between morphology and phylogenomics

open access: yesJournal of Systematics and Evolution, EarlyView.
Using Angiosperms353 and plastid genome skimming approaches, the generic limits of Hyacinthinae were explored using DNA sequences to better understand their evolution. Floral morphology, a traditional generic delimiter, conflicts with the molecular groupings in many cases, but bulb morphology and cytogenetics define similar groups to DNA.

Phylogenomics of primates and their ancestral populations

open access: yes, 2009
Genome assemblies are now available for nine primate species, and large-scale sequencing projects are underway or approved for six others. An explicitly evolutionary and phylogenetic approach to comparative genomics, called phylogenomics, will be ...

The 3D genome of Gigaspora margarita unveils stable chromatin and nucleolar organization and symbiont‐dependent genome dynamics

open access: yesNew Phytologist, EarlyView.
Summary Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) are widespread plant symbionts that enhance nutrient acquisition and influence ecosystem productivity. Previous chromosome‐level assemblies of the model species Rhizophagus irregularis revealed a two‐compartment genome architecture (active A and repressed B chromatin compartments), yet its conservation across ...

Exploring thylakoid emergence: evolution of membrane biogenesis and photosystem II assembly in early‐diverging cyanobacteria

open access: yesNew Phytologist, EarlyView.
Overview of the results. Phylogenetic analyses of 36 assembly factors of photosystem II (PSII) and 13 proteins involved in membrane dynamics summarized in Siebenaller & Schneider (2023) were performed to investigate the taxonomic distributions and structural differences between the thylakoid‐less Gloeobacterales and the Phycobacteria. Summary Thylakoid

Conserved symbiosis‐associated genes in the cycad Encephalartos natalensis suggest co‐option for cyanobacterial symbiosis

open access: yesNew Phytologist, EarlyView.
The heterocyst‐rich Encephalartos natalensis cyanobacterial zone in coralloid root suggests co‐option of conserved symbiosis‐associated genes. This figure was created in BioRender (BioRender.com/https://BioRender.com/n3qveqc). Summary Plant‐cyanobacterial symbioses have evolved independently at least four times across land plants, yet their underlying ...
