Symmetry restrictions in the chirality dependence of physical properties of single-wall nanotubes [PDF]

open access: yes, 2006
We investigate the chirality dependence of physical properties of nanotubes which are wrapped by the planar hexagonal lattice including graphite and boron nitride sheet, and reveal its symmetry origin.

Gut microbiome and aging—A dynamic interplay of microbes, metabolites, and the immune system

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Age‐dependent shifts in microbial communities engender shifts in microbial metabolite profiles. These in turn drive shifts in barrier surface permeability of the gut and brain and induce immune activation. When paired with preexisting age‐related chronic inflammation this increases the risk of neuroinflammation and neurodegenerative diseases.

The effect of organic farming on soil physical properties, infiltration and workability [PDF]

open access: yes, 2011
Organically managed land has increased to 4 % of the total area of agricultural land in the UK. Changing land management can impact upon the rural environment (soils, hydrology and biodiversity) and rural community (socio-economics and culture).

Non-destructive textural quality assessment of peaches and nectarines using near-infrared spectroscopy integration time

open access: yesApplied Food Research
The article addresses the challenge of non-destructively assessing the ripeness and quality of peaches and nectarines, as conventional methods often require invasive testing that can compromise the product.

Influence of the Ambient Relative Humidity on the Very-Long-Term DEF

open access: yesConstruction Materials, 2023
Relative humidity is a key parameter for the development of delayed ettringite formation (DEF). Here, new results of very-long-term experiments (10 years) are presented.

Valosin‐containing protein counteracts ATP‐driven dissolution of FUS condensates through its ATPase activity in vitro

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Biomolecular condensates formed by fused in sarcoma (FUS) are dissolved by high ATP concentrations yet persist in cells. Using a reconstituted system, we demonstrate that valosin‐containing protein (VCP), an AAA+ ATPase, counteracts ATP‐driven dissolution of FUS condensates through its D2 ATPase activity.

Organizing the interface—Plasma membrane architecture and receptor dynamics in virus‐cell interactions

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Plasma membranes contain dynamic nanoscale domains that organize lipids and receptors. Because viruses operate at similar scales, this architecture shapes early infection steps, including attachment, receptor engagement, and entry. Using influenza A virus and HIV‐1 as examples, we highlight how receptor nanoclusters, multivalent glycan interactions ...

Causal properties and conservative reduction [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
The paper argues in favour of (1) a causal-functional theory of all properties including the physical ones and (2) a conception of properties as tropes or modes in the sense of particular ways that objects are.
