THE PHYSICIAN IN HAWAII. [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of the American Medical Association, 1900
As disease and death have prevailed among all people, from the earliest period, so physicians have always been a necessary evil. Since the day Adam got rheumatism cooling off too quickly after his day's work, and Eve became subject to nervous headaches, worrying over the meals and the children, the doctors have been with us, and, unless they meet with ...

Implicit Bias among Physicians and its Prediction of Thrombolysis Decisions for Black and White Patients

open access: yesJournal of general internal medicine, 2007
ContextStudies documenting racial/ethnic disparities in health care frequently implicate physicians’ unconscious biases. No study to date has measured physicians’ unconscious racial bias to test whether this predicts physicians’ clinical decisions ...

Investigating the cell of origin and novel molecular targets in Merkel cell carcinoma: a historic misnomer

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
This study indicates that Merkel cell carcinoma (MCC) does not originate from Merkel cells, and identifies gene, protein & cellular expression of immune‐linked and neuroendocrine markers in primary and metastatic Merkel cell carcinoma (MCC) tumor samples, linked to Merkel cell polyomavirus (MCPyV) status, with enrichment of B‐cell and other immune cell

YAP1::TFE3 mediates endothelial‐to‐mesenchymal plasticity in epithelioid hemangioendothelioma

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
The YAP1::TFE3 fusion protein drives endothelial‐to‐mesenchymal transition (EndMT) plasticity, resulting in the loss of endothelial characteristics and gain of mesenchymal‐like properties, including resistance to anoikis, increased migratory capacity, and loss of contact growth inhibition in endothelial cells.

Relation between Blood Pressure Management and Renal Effects of Sodium-Glucose Cotransporter 2 Inhibitors in Diabetic Patients with Chronic Kidney Disease

open access: yesJournal of Diabetes Research, 2019
Aim. The renoprotective effect of sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 inhibitors is thought to be due, at least in part, to a decrease in blood pressure.

Emerging role of ARHGAP29 in melanoma cell phenotype switching

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
This study gives first insights into the role of ARHGAP29 in malignant melanoma. ARHGAP29 was revealed to be connected to tumor cell plasticity, promoting a mesenchymal‐like, invasive phenotype and driving tumor progression. Further, it modulates cell spreading by influencing RhoA/ROCK signaling and affects SMAD2 activity. Rho GTPase‐activating protein

Preoperative risk factors for extended hospital stay: A prospective study in a South African clinic

open access: yesAfrican Journal of Primary Health Care & Family Medicine
Background: Preoperative assessment clinics play a critical role in identifying, evaluating and mitigating perioperative risks. Despite global data highlighting the importance of preoperative risk factors on surgical outcomes, there remains limited ...
