European Journal of Biochemistry, 1976Phycomyces strain C5, carrying mutation carB10, accumulates phytoene instead of β‐carotene. A leaky carB mutant, isolated from a red, lycopene-producing strain, accumulates decreasing amounts of phytoene, phytofluene, ζ-carotene, neurosporene, and lycopene.

cDNA cloning and expression of the phytoene synthase gene in sunflower
Journal of Plant Physiology, 2005A PCR approach was used to isolate a phytoene synthase (Psy) cDNA from sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.). A reconstructed full-length sequence (1598 bp) of the Psy cDNA was obtained; it contained a 1242 bp CDS, 172-nucleotides of 5'-untranslated region (UTR), and 170-nucleotides of 3'-UTR.
