Phytoene production in Phycomyces
Archives of Biochemistry and Biophysics, 1957Summary The effects of streptomycin and methylheptenone on phytoene production in Phycomyces blakesleeanus have been studied. It is shown that methylheptenone acts as a powerful stimulant of phytoene production. The magnitude of the accumulation is comparable with that of β -caro-tene by β -ionone.

Abstract Phytoene, a noncrystalline, colorless polyene isolated from tomatoes and carrot oil has been shown to have an acyclic isoprenic structure, and its perhydro derivative (perhydrophytoene) has been shown to be identical with perhydrolycopene. According to its physical and chemical properties and to the isolation of acetone, levulinic aldehyde ...

Abstract The configuration of natural phytoene is established as 15,15′ cis -7,8,7′,8′,11,12, 11′,12′-octahydrolycopene through ultraviolet, infrared, and nuclear magnetic resonance spectral analyses and through catalytic isomerization with iodine.

Isolation and properties of phytoene
Archives of Biochemistry and Biophysics, 1954Abstract Phytoene, a new noncrystalline, colorless polyene, has been isolated from tomatoes and carrot oil by an improved adsorptive procedure. It was adsorbed less strongly than the known carotenes and polyenes on magnesia and alumina. It produced a very weak Carr-Price reaction, but it did give a characteristic color reaction with the Liebermann ...

Phytoene Accumulation in Sunflower Decreases the Transcript Levels of the Phytoene Synthase Gene
Plant Growth Regulation, 2006The non dormant-1 (nd-1) mutant of sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.) and fluridone-treated plants were used to investigate the effect of phytoene accumulation on the transcript levels of the phytoene synthase (Ha-PSY) gene. A deficiency at the gene coding for ζ-carotene desaturase (ZDS) characterises the nd-1 mutant, which displays an accumulation of ζ ...

Phytoene synthase (PSase) catalyzes the condensation of two molecules of geranylgeranyl diphosphate (GGPP) to give prephytoene diphosphate (PPPP) and the subsequent rearrangement of the cyclopropylcarbinyl intermediate to phytoene. These reactions constitute the first pathway specific step in carotenoid biosynthesis.

Phytoene synthase (PSY) and phytoene desaturase (PDS), which catalyze the first and second steps of the carotenoid biosynthetic pathway, respectively, are key enzymes for the accumulation of carotenoids in many plants. We isolated 2 partial cDNAs encoding PSY (AsPSY-1 and AsPSY-2) and a partial cDNA encoding PDS (AsPDS) from Allium sativum. They shared

Evidence for phytoene in euglena mutants
Plant Science Letters, 1974Abstract The hydrocarbon carotene fractions of several non-photosynthetic mutants of Euglena gracilis var. bacillaris and of Astasia longa were examined. Evidence for the presence of phytoene, the presumed precursor of all C-40 carotenoids, is reported from 3 mutants, SM-L1, PBZ-G3 and HB-G, which synthesize unsaturated C-40 polyenes; they also
