The yellow colour of durum wheat (Triticum turgidum L. var durum) semolina is due in part to the presence of carotenoid pigments found in the endosperm and is an important end-use quality trait. We hypothesized that variation in the genes coding for phytoene synthase (Psy), a critical enzyme in carotenoid biosynthesis, may partially explain the ...

Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry
Phytoene synthase (PSY) catalyzes the committed and rate-limiting step in carotenoid biosynthesis by condensing two geranylgeranyl diphosphate molecules into 15-cis-phytoene. As the gateway enzyme, PSY directs metabolic flux toward diverse carotenoids, which functions as essential pigments, antioxidants, and provitamin A precursors in nutrition and ...

White mutants of Chlamydomonas reinhardtii are defective in phytoene synthase.
Genetics, 2005Carotenoids play an integral and essential role in photosynthesis and photoprotection in plants and algae. A collection of Chlamydomonas reinhardtii mutants lacking carotenoids was characterized for pigment and tocopherol (vitamin E) composition, growth phenotypes under different light conditions, and the molecular basis of their mutant phenotype.

Phytoene synthase modulates seed longevity via β-carotene derived metabolites
Plant PhysiologyAbstract Seed longevity, the seed's ability to stay viable over time, is an important trait in agriculture that remains a fundamental topic in plant biology. Here, we discovered a function of carotenoid metabolites in prolonging seed lifespan.

Cloning and characterization of a cDNA encoding phytoene synthase (PSY) in tea
2010Carotenoids are an important group of precursors of volatile flavour compounds in tea and phytoene synthase (PSY) is a key enzyme during the biosynthesis pathway of carotenoids. A cDNA encoding PSYin tea shoot [Camellia sinensis (L.) O. Kuntze] was cloned and sequenced in the present study.
