Phytosterols and vascular disease
Atherosclerosis, 2006Phytosterols or plant sterols have long been known to lower serum cholesterol concentrations by competing with dietary and biliary cholesterol for intestinal absorption. Food products containing phytosterols and phytostanols are now available to assist in lowering blood cholesterol levels.

Oral absorption of phytosterols and emulsified phytosterols by Sprague-Dawley rats
The Journal of Nutritional Biochemistry, 2004Clinical studies have demonstrated that consumption of phytosterol esters in lipid-based foods decreases serum concentrations of total and LDL cholesterol. These substances represent minimal potential for adverse effects when consumed orally because of their low bioavailability.

Phytosterols and cholesterol metabolism
Current Opinion in Lipidology, 2004Phytosterols are plant sterols structurally similar to cholesterol that act in the intestine to lower cholesterol absorption. Because they have very low systemic absorption and are already present in healthy diets, increasing the intake of phytosterols may be a practical way to reduce coronary heart disease with minimum risk.Phytosterols displace ...
