Estimated numbers and prevalence of PI*S and PI*Z alleles of α1-antitrypsin deficiency in European countries [PDF]

open access: yesEuropean Respiratory Journal, 2006
The current study focuses on developing estimates of the numbers of individuals carrying the two most common deficiency alleles, PI*S and PI*Z, for α1-antitrypsin deficiency (AT-D) in Europe.Criteria for selection of epidemiological studies were: 1) AT phenotyping performed by isoelectrofocusing or antigen–antibody crossed electrophoresis; 2) rejection

Structural insights into an engineered feruloyl esterase with improved MHET degrading properties

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
A feruloyl esterase was engineered to mimic key features of MHETase, enhancing the degradation of PET oligomers. Structural and computational analysis reveal how a point mutation stabilizes the active site and reshapes the binding cleft, expading substrate scope.

Correlation between fetal-placental doppler indices and maternal cardiac function in pregnant women with late-Onset preeclampsia or fetal growth restriction

open access: yesBMC Pregnancy and Childbirth
Background Fetal growth restriction (FGR) and late-onset preeclampsia (late-onset PE) reflect placental dysfunction but exhibit distinct maternal hemodynamics within the “maternal cardiovascular-placental-fetal unit”.

Estimated numbers and prevalence of PI*S and PI*Z deficiency alleles of α1-antitrypsin deficiency in Asia [PDF]

open access: yesEuropean Respiratory Journal, 2006
The current study focuses on updating estimates of the numbers of individuals carrying the two most common deficiency alleles, protease inhibitor (PI)*S and PI*Z, for α1-antitrypsin deficiency (AT-D) in 20 Asian countries.A total of 170 cohorts with 31,177 individuals were selected from 20 Asian countries.

Valosin‐containing protein counteracts ATP‐driven dissolution of FUS condensates through its ATPase activity in vitro

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Biomolecular condensates formed by fused in sarcoma (FUS) are dissolved by high ATP concentrations yet persist in cells. Using a reconstituted system, we demonstrate that valosin‐containing protein (VCP), an AAA+ ATPase, counteracts ATP‐driven dissolution of FUS condensates through its D2 ATPase activity.

The ubiquitin ligase RNF115 is required for the clearance of damaged lysosomes

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Upon lysosomal rupture, an E3 ubiquitin ligase RNF115 translocates from the cytosol to the damaged lysosomal membrane. Moreover, RNF115 depletion impairs the clearance of damaged lysosomes, identifying it as a key regulator of lysosomal quality control.

Prevalence of α1-antitrypsin deficiency alleles PI*S and PI*Z worldwide and effective screening for each of the five phenotypic classes PI*MS, PI*MZ, PI*SS, PI*SZ, and PI*ZZ: a comprehensive review

open access: yesTherapeutic Advances in Respiratory Disease, 2012
Genetic epidemiological studies on the prevalence and numbers of individuals with α1-antitrypsin deficiency in each of 97 countries worldwide were used to estimate the numbers in each of the five following phenotypic classes: PI*MS, PI*MZ, PI*SS, PI*SZ ...

Expressiveness and definability in circumscription

open access: yesManuscrito, 2011
We investigate expressiveness and definability issues with respect to minimal models, particularly in the scope of Circumscription. First, we give a proof of the failure of the Löwenheim-Skolem Theorem for Circumscription. Then we show that, if the class

Organizing the interface—Plasma membrane architecture and receptor dynamics in virus‐cell interactions

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Plasma membranes contain dynamic nanoscale domains that organize lipids and receptors. Because viruses operate at similar scales, this architecture shapes early infection steps, including attachment, receptor engagement, and entry. Using influenza A virus and HIV‐1 as examples, we highlight how receptor nanoclusters, multivalent glycan interactions ...
