Identification of the Best Cut-Off Value of PIVKA-II for the Surveillance of Patients at Risk of Hepatocellular Carcinoma Development

open access: yesBiology, 2023
Patients with cirrhosis are at risk of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) development and, according to current guidelines, should undergo surveillance by ultrasound at six month intervals.

Potenciál využitia galectinu-3 a PIVKA II v hepatológii / The potential use of galectin-3 and PIVKA II in hepatology

open access: yes, 2022

Surgical Outcomes and Recurrence Management in Borderline Resectable Hepatocellular Carcinoma: Implications for Multidisciplinary Strategies

open access: yesAnnals of Gastroenterological Surgery, Volume 10, Issue 4, Page 1143-1154, July 2026.
Multivariate analysis identified that up‐to‐7 out (p < 0.001), lymph node metastasis (p < 0.001), and non‐anatomical resection (p = 0.02) were independent predictors of cancer recurrence, while older age (p = 0.01), Child‐Pugh B (p < 0.001), up‐to‐7 out (p = 0.01), macrovascular invasion (p = 0.01), and lymph node metastasis (p < 0.001) were ...

Burnt‐Out MASLD Predicts Outcomes After Curative Resection for Hepatocellular Carcinoma

open access: yesLiver International, Volume 46, Issue 7, July 2026.
ABSTRACT Background and Aims Hepatic steatosis often diminishes as metabolic dysfunction–associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) progresses, leading to a so‐called ‘burnt‐out’ state. Whether this phenotype simply reflects advanced liver injury or represents a biologically distinct condition with prognostic relevance after hepatocellular carcinoma ...

Association Between Multi‐Laboratory Parameters Pre‐ and Post‐Treatment and Pathological Features and Their Values in Clinical Decision in Primary Hepatic Carcinoma

open access: yesJournal of Clinical Laboratory Analysis, Volume 40, Issue 11, June 2026.
Primary hepatic cancer (PHC), especially hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), is still a significant burden worldwide. The efficacy of diagnosis, treatment response monitoring, and prognostication using laboratory biomarkers is still a challenge. This study analyzed multi‐laboratory parameters pre‐ and post‐treatment and their associations with clinical and

Enterococcus faecalis Extracellular Vesicles Deliver the Bacterial GTPase Obg to Hijack mTOR Signalling in Hepatocellular Carcinoma

open access: yesJournal of Extracellular Vesicles, Volume 15, Issue 6, June 2026.
E. faecalis is enriched in HCC tissue and can promote liver tumourigenesis by activating mTOR signalling pathway. Obg derived from E. faecalis extracellular vesicles (EVs) is a GTPase physically interacts with mTOR, and acts as an interkingdom activator of mTOR. EF‐Obg expression level in HCC tissue correlates with poor prognosis in HCC patients.

The diagnostic performance of PIVKA-II in metabolic and viral hepatocellular carcinoma: A pilot study

open access: yes, 2020
OBJECTIVE: Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is a primary liver tumor derived from metabolic or viral chronic hepatitis, with few treatment options in advanced cases. New biomarkers that allow improving diagnosis and staging are widely desired. Here, we aim

Prognostic Value of Pathological Response After Conversion Therapy and Salvage Surgery in Unresectable Hepatocellular Carcinoma

open access: yesLiver International, Volume 46, Issue 6, June 2026.
ABSTRACT Background and Aims To evaluate the prognostic significance of pathological response in patients with initially unresectable hepatocellular carcinoma (uHCC) who underwent salvage resection after successful conversion with lenvatinib, anti‐PD‐1 antibodies, and locoregional therapy (LPLRT).

Usefulness of PIVKA-II for diagnosis and evaluation of recurrence of hepatocellular carcinoma [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
Backgroud: Although alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) is most widely used tumor marker for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), the sensitivity is about 60~70% in advanced HCC. Furthermore, the specificity of AFP is relatively low. The aim of this study was to evaluate

Diagnostic Performance of AFP, AFP-L3, or PIVKA-II for Hepatitis C Virus-Associated Hepatocellular Carcinoma: A Multicenter Analysis

open access: yes, 2022
Background and Aim: Alpha-fetoprotein (AFP), a lens culinaris agglutinin-reactive fraction of AFP (AFP-L3), is a protein that is induced by vitamin K deficiency or antagonist-II (PIVKA-II) that has been clinically used as a serum biomarker for early ...
