Peptide‐based ligand antagonists block a Vibrio cholerae adhesin

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
The structure of a peptide‐binding domain of the Vibrio cholerae adhesin FrhA was solved by X‐ray crystallography, revealing how the inhibitory peptide AGYTD binds tightly at its Ca2+‐coordinated pocket. Structure‐guided design incorporating D‐amino acids enhanced binding affinity, providing a foundation for developing anti‐adhesion therapeutics ...

Anti-quorum Sensing and Antimicrobial Effect of Mediterranean Plant Essential Oils Against Phytopathogenic Bacteria

open access: yesFrontiers in Microbiology, 2019
Essential oils (EOs) are one of the most interesting natural products extracted from different aromatic plants. For centuries, EOs have been considered an essential part of the traditional pharmacopeia.

Influence of extraction methods on the composition of essential oils of Achillea millefolium L. from Lithuania [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
In this study, flowering aerial parts of Achillea millefolium were used as a matrix for supercritical CO2 extraction (SFE) of volatile oil. The collected extracts were analyzed by GC-FID and GC-MS methods and their composition were compared with that of ...

Inhibiting stearoyl‐CoA desaturase suppresses bone metastatic prostate cancer by modulating cellular stress, mTOR signaling, and DNA damage response

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Bone metastasis in prostate cancer (PCa) patients is a clinical hurdle due to the poor understanding of the supportive bone microenvironment. Here, we identify stearoyl‐CoA desaturase (SCD) as a tumor‐promoting enzyme and potential therapeutic target in bone metastatic PCa.

Survivin and Aurora Kinase A control cell fate decisions during mitosis

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Aurora A interacts with survivin during mitosis and regulates its centromeric role. Loss of Aurora A activity mislocalises survivin, the CPC and BubR1, leading to disruption of the spindle checkpoint and triggering premature mitotic exit, which we refer to as ‘mitotic slippage’.

Subcritical water extraction of essential oils and plant oils

open access: yesSustainable Chemistry and Pharmacy, 2023
Subcritical water extraction is a green technology with interesting advantages in relation to the possibility of processing fresh raw materials to sustainably obtain natural valuable products. The potential of this technology for the aqueous extraction of lipophilic fractions from plant biomass is well known and has recently attracted renewed interest.

CDK11 inhibition induces cytoplasmic p21WAF1 splice variant by p53 stabilisation and SF3B1 inactivation

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
CDK11 inhibition stabilises the tumour suppressor p53 and triggers the production of an alternative p21WAF1 splice variant p21L, through the inactivation of the spliceosomal protein SF3B1. Unlike the canonical p21WAF1 protein, p21L is localised in the cytoplasm and has reduced cell cycle‐blocking activity.
