Drug interactions with the dietary fiberPlantago ovatahusk

Expert Opinion on Drug Metabolism & Toxicology, 2012
Plantago ovata husk is a viscous water-soluble fiber obtained by milling the seed of Plantago ovata. The increased use of this compound for the treatment of diseases makes it necessary to know of its potential drug interactions. The present paper reviews the literature concerning interactions between drugs and the dietary fiber Plantago ovata husk.

Chemically sulfated arabinoxylans from Plantago ovata seed husk: Synthesis, characterization and antiviral activity

Carbohydrate Polymers, 2021
Limited options for the treatments of diseases triggered through viral infections revealed the quest for novel antiviral drugs. Polysaccharide sulfates owing to their unique mode of action are prominent antiviral drug candidates. Herein, the arabinoxylan of Plantago ovata seed husk was simultaneously extracted and chemically sulfated using sulphur ...

Ethylation of arabinoxylan from Ispaghula (Plantago ovata) seed husk

Carbohydrate Polymers, 2009
Abstract The ethylation of arabinoxylan, isolated from Ispaghula seed husk by alkali extraction, was carried out heterogeneously with ethyl iodide in the presence of aqueous sodium hydroxide (25%). The reaction parameters were varied in terms of molar ratio anhydrosugar unit:reagent, slurry medium, and temperature.

Structural data for the carbohydrate of ispaghula husk ex Plantago ovata forsk

Carbohydrate Research, 1979
Abstract The husk from the seeds of Plantago ovata Forsk yielded two fractions when exposed to mild aikali, namely, the mucilage polysaccharide (85%, apparently a single species) and the non-polysaccharide component (15%). Methylation analysis and partial hydrolysis with acid showed the mucilage polysaccharide to be a highly branched, acidic ...

Effects of Plantago ovata Husk on Levodopa (with Carbidopa) Bioavailability in Rabbits with Autonomic Gastrointestinal Disorders

Drug Metabolism and Disposition, 2009
Gastrointestinal dysfunction is common in Parkinson's disease. Fiber therapy could be used to reduce the symptoms of gastrointestinal motility disorders. In a previous study, we showed that slowed gastrointestinal motility modified levodopa pharmacokinetics: area under the plasma concentration-time curve (AUC) and maximum plasma concentration (C(max ...

Effect of Plantago ovata (psyllium) husk and seeds on sterol metabolism: studies in normal and ileostomy subjects.

American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, 1994
The diet of six normal and five ileostomy subjects was supplemented with 10 g/d Plantago ovata psyllium husk for 3 wk while six normal and four ileostomy subjects received 10 g/d psyllium seed. Fecal and ileostomy output, sterol excretion, serum cholesterol, and triglycerides were measured before and after supplementation.

Use of Psyllium Husk (Plantago ovata) in Poultry Feeding and Possible Application in Organic Production

2022
Herbs or medicinal plants have gained significant attention due to their bioactive compounds that could act as antioxidants, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, anticancer agents, etc. Psyllium husk (Plantago ovata) is an Indian native herb. The water-loving (hydrophilic) mucilloid and water-soluble fiber derived from Plantago ovata have been used in ...

Investigations of Plantago ovata husk Powder as a Disintegrating Agent for Development of Famotidine Tablets

International Journal of Pharmaceutical Sciences and Nanotechnology, 2011
The main objective of this study is to explore development of pharmaceutical excipients from the husk obtained from the seeds of Plantago ovata. Husk shows very good swelling property in water due to the major part of mucilage in it. Since swelling is one of the mechanisms of action of some tablet disintegrants, it is thought that the husk powder of ...

The gel nature and structure of the carbohydrate of ispaghula husk ex Plantago ovata Forsk

Carbohydrate Research, 1981
Abstract Mucilage from the seed husk of Plantago ovata Forsk is an arabinosyl(galactosyluronic acid)rhamnosylxylan. A wide range of molecular sizes was revealed by chromatography of the methylated mucilage on Sephadex LH-60, and the resulting 12 fractions were homologous.
