There are 19-40 species of plum, depending on taxonomist, that have originated in Europe, Asia and America. From this great diversity only two species, the hexaploid European plum (Prunus domestica) and the diploid Japanese plum (P. salicina and hybrids), are of worldwide commercial significance.

PLUM ROOTSTOCKS FOR INTENSIVE PLUM CULTURE

At SCDP Valcea a rootstock breeding program started 30 years ago and its main targets were to obtain plum rootstocks suited to the soil conditions from the hill area of Romania (clay soils, thin, wet and with low natural fertility). The breeding program released 7 plum rootstocks for intensive culture.
