Snails in the sun: Strategies of terrestrial gastropods to cope with hot and dry conditions

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, 2019
Terrestrial gastropods do not only inhabit humid and cool environments but also habitat in which hot and dry conditions prevail. Snail species that are able to cope with such climatic conditions are thus expected to having developed multifaceted ...

Near‐Field Phonon Nanoscopy and Imaging of Structural Variants in Mixed Phase BiFeO3

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Nano‐Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and scattering scanning near‐field optical microscopy imaging reveal the phonon response of nanoscale phase variants in mixed‐phase BiFeO3 (BFO). Direct mid‐infrared imaging of associated distinct vibrational signatures is used as a non‐invasive optical detection method for electrical switching of ...

ZRT1 harbors an excess of nonsynonymous polymorphism and shows evidence of balancing selection in Saccharomyces cerevisiae [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2012
Estimates of the fraction of nucleotide substitutions driven by positive selection vary widely across different species. Accounting for different estimates of positive selection has been difficult, in part because selection on polymorphism within a species is known to obscure a signal of positive selection between species.

Highly Efficient 3D‐Printed PVDF‐Based Triboelectric Nanogenerators Featuring Polymorphic Perovskite Nanofillers

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
This study demonstrates the use of a low‐cost 3D printing technique to prepare a large‐area PVDF‐FAPbI3 composite dielectric film for flexible TENG application. The δ→α phase transformation of the FAPbI3 nanofillers has significantly improved the β‐phase content, morphology, and dielectric properties of the PVDF film.

A Straightforward Method to Judge the Completeness of a Polymorphic Gate Set [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2017
Polymorphic circuits are a special kind of circuits which possess some different build-in functions and these functions are activated by environment parameters, like light and VDD. Some theories have been proposed to guide the design of polymorphic circuits, including the definition of complete polymorphic gate sets and algorithms to judge the ...

Understanding and Optimizing Li Substitution in P2‐Type Sodium Layered Oxides for Sodium‐Ion Batteries

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
This work explores Li‐substituted P2 layered oxides for Na‐ion batteries by crystallographic and electrochemical studies. The effect of lithium on superstructure orderings, on phase transitions during synthesis and electrochemical cycling and on the interplay of O‐ versus TM‐redox is revealed via various advanced techniques, including semi‐simultaneous

Non-association of IL-12 +1188 and IFN-γ +874 polymorphisms with cytokines serum level in occult HBV infected patients

open access: yesThe Saudi Journal of Gastroenterology, 2011
Background/Aim: Occult hepatitis B infection (OBI) is identified as a form of hepatitis in which despite the absence of detectable HBsAg, HBV-DNA is observed in peripheral blood of patients.

High Thermoelectric Performance in Low‐Cost Cu8SiSxSe6‐x Argyrodite

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
This study discovers the great potential of Cu8SiSxSe6‐x argyrodites as new, low‐cost, Te‐free thermoelectric materials. The proposed defect scheme suppresses the phase transition, enhances the weighted mobility and optimizes the grain boundary contacts.

New Polymorphs of Two-Dimensional Indium Selenide with Enhanced Electronic Properties [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2020
The two-dimensional (2D) semiconductor indium selenide (InSe) has attracted significant interest due its unique electronic band structure, high electron mobility and wide tunability of its band gap energy achieved by varying the layer thickness.

Complement Receptor 1 (CR1, CD35) Polymorphisms and Soluble CR1: A Proposed Anti-inflammatory Role to Quench the Fire of “Fogo Selvagem” Pemphigus Foliaceus

open access: yesFrontiers in Immunology, 2019
Pemphigus foliaceus is an autoimmune disease that is sporadic around the world but endemic in Brazil, where it is known as fogo selvagem (FS). Characterized by autoantibodies against the desmosomal cadherin desmoglein 1, FS causes painful erosions, and ...
