Bioactive Polysaccharides Targeting Gut Microbiota to Modulate Host Health: A Gear Effect Theory

open access: yesFood Frontiers
Bioactive polysaccharides are macromolecular polymers with broad biological activities. Recent evidence has highlighted their role in modulating host health primarily through interactions with gut microbiota.

Disease Stage-Specific Pathogenicity of CD138 (Syndecan 1)-Expressing T Cells in Systemic Lupus Erythematosus

open access: yesFrontiers in Immunology, 2020
CD138 (syndecan 1), a member of the heparan-sulfate proteoglycan family, regulates diverse biological responses by interacting with chemokines, cytokines, growth factors, and adhesion molecules.

The potential health benefits of seaweed and seaweed extract [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
Edible seaweeds have historically been consumed by coastal populations across the globe. Today, seaweed is still part of the habitual diet in many Asian countries. Seaweed consumption also appears to be growing in popularity in Western cultures, due both

Multi‐Responsive Dendrimer‐Hyaluronic Acid Hydrogel With Lubricating and Immunoregulatory Functions for Synergistic Osteoarthritis Therapy

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
A hydrogel with dynamic cross‐links was formed by cross‐linking hyaluronic acid with curcumin‐preloaded, phenylboronic acid‐modified poly(amidoamine) dendrimers. This hydrogel exhibited excellent injectability and self‐healing ability, enabling controlled Cur release in response to low pH, high reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation, or mechanical ...

The Incorporation of Plant-Derived Polysaccharides into Alginate-Based Capsules Improve Probiotic Viabilities During Storage, Gastrointestinal Digestion, and Their Application in Yogurt

open access: yesFoods
The objective of this research was to combine three plant-derived polysaccharides, Lycium barbarum polysaccharides (LBP), peach gum polysaccharide (PGP), and citrus pectin (CP), with alginate (SA) to co-encapsulate probiotics and investigate the survival

Molar mass and solution conformation of branched alpha(1 - 4), alpha(1 - 6) Glucans. Part I: Glycogens in water [PDF]

open access: yes, 2008
Solution molar masses and conformations of glycogens from different sources (rabbit, oyster, mussel and bovine) were analysed using sedimentation velocity in the analytical ultracentrifuge, size-exclusion chromatography coupled to multi-angle laser light

Active Learning‐Accelerated Discovery of Fibrous Hydrogels with Tissue‐Mimetic Viscoelasticity

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Active learning accelerates the design of fibrous hydrogels that mimic the viscoelasticity of native tissues. By integrating multi‐objective optimization and closed‐loop experimentation, this approach efficiently identifies optimal formulations from thousands of possibilities and decouples elasticity and viscosity. The resulting hydrogels offer tunable

Comparative Study on the In Vitro Fermentation Characteristics of Three Plant-Derived Polysaccharides with Different Structural Compositions

open access: yesFoods
This study aimed to elucidate the structure–activity relationship between the structural characteristics of three plant-derived polysaccharides, Lycium barbarum polysaccharide (LBP), citrus pectin (CP) and peach gum polysaccharide (PGP), and their ...

An Edible H2O2 Biosensor for Gastrointestinal Metabolites and Peroxidase Enzyme Quantification

open access: yesAdvanced Healthcare Materials, EarlyView.
We present an edible biosensor for gastric fluid analysis that integrates a caffeic acid–horseradish peroxidase redox system into an edible electrolyte‐gated transistor. The device enables rapid, low‐volume detection of H2O2 and, with minimal modification, metabolites and enzyme activity in simulated gastrointestinal conditions.

Genipin‐Crosslinked, Silane‐Anchored 3D Tumor–Stroma Microtissues for High‐Content On‐Chip Drug Testing

open access: yesAdvanced Healthcare Materials, EarlyView.
We describe a microfluidic tumor‐stroma co‐culture model, engineered to resist collagen‐hydrogel contraction driven by fibroblast activity. Surface silanization with APTES covalently anchors the matrix to the chip, while Genipin crosslinking progressively increases stiffness and elasticity without harming cells. This supports >10 days of co‐culture and
