Prebiotic metabolic networks? [PDF]

open access: yesMolecular Systems Biology, 2014
A prebiotic origin of metabolism has been proposed as one of several scenarios for the origin of life. In their recent work, Ralser and colleagues (Keller et al, ) observe an enzyme‐free, metabolism‐like reaction network under conditions reproducing a possible prebiotic environment.

Pressure‐Driven Reactivity in Dense Methane‐Nitrogen Mixtures

open access: yesAngewandte Chemie, EarlyView.
CH4 and N2 are abundant molecules in our solar system and are the primary constituents of Titan's atmosphere. Under extreme pressures and temperatures within a diamond anvil cell, CH4 and N2 are demonstrated to react to form a range of compounds, dependent on the conditions and initial concentrations.

A Review of Prebiotics Against Salmonella in Poultry: Current and Future Potential for Microbiome Research Applications

open access: yesFrontiers in Veterinary Science, 2018
Prebiotics are typically fermentable feed additives that can directly or indirectly support a healthy intestinal microbiota. Prebiotics have gained increasing attention in the poultry industry as wariness toward antibiotic use has grown in the face of ...

Adhesion mechanisms mediated by probiotics and prebiotics and their potential impact on human health

open access: yesApplied Microbiology and Biotechnology, 2019
Adhesion ability to the host is a classical selection criterion for potential probiotic bacteria that could result in a transient colonisation that would help to promote immunomodulatory effects, as well as stimulate gut barrier and metabolic functions ...

Correlation Between Fecal Microbiota and Corticosteroid Responsiveness in Primary Immune Thrombocytopenia: an Exploratory Study

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
This study uses gut microbiome data to predict corticosteroid response in patients with immune thrombocytopenia (ITP). Fecal samples from 212 patients with ITP are sequenced. Six machine‐learning algorithms are used to train predictive models. The support vector machine‐based model integrated clinical data and selected microbial species, diversities ...

Supramolecular Gels as Active Tools for Reaction Engineering

open access: yesAngewandte Chemie, EarlyView.
The unique combination of environments within gels, self‐assembled from low‐molecular‐weight gelators, offers the ability to control reactivity in new ways, achieving unique reaction outcomes, leading to the emerging concept of supramolecular gels as nanoreactors. Smart chemical engineering methods enable the use of such gels to fabricate materials and

Established and emerging prebiotics for gut microbiota [PDF]

open access: yesMicrobiota in Health and Disease
The concept of prebiotics was introduced more than two decades ago, but these bioactive molecules still represent an attractive area of research. This is due to their close connection with the intestinal microbiota and, consequently, of the entire human ...

Orally Administered Functional Polyphenol‐Nanozyme‐Armored Probiotics for Enhanced Amelioration of Intestinal Inflammation and Microbiota Dysbiosis

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
This study presents a novel polyphenol‐nanozyme‐armored probiotic system (ECA@EcN) for enhanced treatment of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). By integrating chitosan‐modified epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG‐CS) with gold nanozymes, the system effectively scavenges ROS, improves probiotic viability, and restores gut microbiota balance.

Prebiotic Interconversion of Pyruvate and Lactate over Zeolite‐Supported Ni Catalyst

open access: yesAngewandte Chemie, EarlyView.
Synthetic zeolite Y‐supported Ni mineral can catalyze the interconversion of metabolically crucial pyruvate and lactate under hydrothermal vent conditions, which could pave the way for the modern biological process by lactate dehydrogenase and nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide.
