Chronic Low‐Level Lead Exposure Causes Auditory Impairment and Accelerates the Progression of Age‐Related Hearing Loss in C57BL/6J Mice

open access: yesAging Cell, Volume 25, Issue 1, January 2026.
Chronic low‐concentration lead exposure accelerates the development of ARHL. Lead exposure mediates damage to cochlear sensory cells via the mitochondrial protease LONP1, leading to irreversible hearing loss. ABSTRACT Heavy metal ion exposure has become a global public health concern.

Downregulation of BST2 Rescues Cochlear Nerve Demyelination in Age‐Related Hearing Loss via Enhancing Schwann Cell Migration

open access: yesAging Cell, Volume 25, Issue 1, January 2026.
The illustration indicates that increased BST2 expression in Schwann cells leads to cochlear nerve demyelination, accelerating hearing loss in ARHL. The upregulation of BST2 reduces POU6F1 expression by activating the NF‐κB pathway, which impairs MPZ transcription and Schwann cell migration, ultimately contributing to neural demyelination in ARHL ...

Multivariate search for differentially expressed gene combinations [PDF]

open access: yes, 2004
Background To identify differentially expressed genes, it is standard practice to test a two-sample hypothesis for each gene with a proper adjustment for multiple testing. Such tests are essentially univariate and disregard the multidimensional structure

Ultrastructural Synaptic Differences in the Central Inferior Colliculus in the 3xTG Mouse Across Three Disease Stages

open access: yesJournal of Comparative Neurology, Volume 533, Issue 12, December 2025.
Symmetric and asymmetric synapses were significantly downregulated by 50% and 20%, respectively, in the aging inferior colliculus of the Alzheimer's 3xTG mouse model during the emerging disease stage (7–8 months). There was no additional significant loss from the emerging disease stage into the established disease stage.

Functional changes in the human auditory cortex in ageing.

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2015
Hearing loss, presbycusis, is one of the most common sensory declines in the ageing population. Presbycusis is characterised by a deterioration in the processing of temporal sound features as well as a decline in speech perception, thus indicating a ...

Quality of life and the benefits of remediation in patients with hearing loss or peripheral vestibular disorders [PDF]

open access: yes, 2011
This paper presents the effect that hearing loss and Benign Positional Proximal Vertigo (BPPV) have on quality of life and the impact of treatment. The primary purpose of this paper is to critically review the existing literature to determine the effect ...
