Polycystin-2 is an essential ion channel subunit in the primary cilium of the renal collecting duct epithelium

open access: yeseLife, 2018
Mutations in the polycystin genes, PKD1 or PKD2, results in Autosomal Dominant Polycystic Kidney Disease (ADPKD). Although a genetic basis of ADPKD is established, we lack a clear understanding of polycystin proteins’ functions as ion channels.

Functional aspects of primary cilium in signaling, assembly and microenvironment in cancer

open access: yesJournal of Cellular Physiology, 2020
The primary cilium is an antennae‐like structure extent outside the cell surface. It has an important role in regulating cell‐signaling transduction to affect proliferation, differentiation and migration.

The Primary Cilium: A Small Yet Mighty Organelle [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Investigative Dermatology, 2009
Primary cilia are small, cylindrical membrane protrusions on most vertebrate cell types. Despite an unassuming appearance, this organelle has proven to be a veritable nexus of tightly regulated cell-signal reception between the epithelium and mesenchyme. In this issue, Lehman et al.

Engineered Living Systems With Self‐Organizing Neural Networks: From Anatomy to Behavior and Gene Expression

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Ectodermal tissue excised from Xenopus embryos self‐organizes into a three‐dimensional mucociliary organoid. Here, we generate a neural variant, termed neurobot, by implanting neural precursor cells. Neurobots develop mature neurons, adopt distinct morphologies, exhibit more complex motility, and respond differentially to neuroactive compounds. Imaging

The role of primary cilia in neuronal function

open access: yesNeurobiology of Disease, 2010
The “ciliopathies” are a newly defined group of disorders characterized by defects in the structure or function of the cellular primary cilium. Patients with these disorders display variably expressive fibrocystic renal disease, retinal blindness ...

Hedgehog signaling pathway and its targets for treatment in basal cell carcinoma [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
Basal cell carcinoma (BCC) of the skin is the most common type of cancer, and accounts for up to 40% of all cancers in the United States with a growing incidence rate in the last decades in all developed countries.

Primary cilium remodeling mediates a cell signaling switch in differentiating neurons

open access: yesScience Advances, 2020
Newborn neurons assemble a new primary cilium, leading to a change in the mode of Shh signaling that now directs axon extension. Cellular differentiation leads to the formation of specialized cell types and complex morphological variations.

Dynamics of the Primary Cilium in Shear Flow [PDF]

open access: yesBiophysical Journal, 2012
In this work, the equilibrium shape and dynamics of a primary cilium under flow are investigated by using both theoretical modeling and experiment. The cilium is modeled as an elastic beam that may undergo large deflection due to the hydrodynamic load. Equilibrium results show that the anchoring effects of the basal body on the cilium axoneme behave as

Functional Analysis of Ligand‐Gated Chloride Channels in a Cnidarian Sheds Light on the Evolution of Inhibitory Signaling

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
We uncover a large variety of putative inhibitory ligand‐gated ion channels (LGICs) in the phylum Cnidaria, the sister group to all bilaterian animals. Phylogenetic analysis suggests a complex evolutionary history of inhibitory LGICs with diverse neurotransmitter ligands.
