Patterns of care for Multiple Sclerosis in a setting of universal care access: A cross-sectional study [PDF]

open access: yes, 2019
BACKGROUND Current guidelines recommend regular neurological MS care in persons diagnosed with MS, but little is known about implementation of this recommendation or potential access barriers.

Microbiome‐blood–brain barrier interactions in aging — mechanisms and therapeutic potential

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Aging reshapes the gut microbiome (↓SCFA‐producing commensals; ↑pro‐inflammatory outputs), shifting circulating metabolites (↓SCFAs; ↑LPS, ↑TMAO, ↑PAA) that act at the BBB to increase nonspecific transcytosis, alter transport, and promote astrocyte reactivity, heightening brain vulnerability.

Autophagy and mitophagy in pancreatic β‐cell homeostasis and their involvement in diabetes pathophysiology

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
This review focuses on the role of autophagy and mitophagy in maintaining pancreatic β‐cell function and homeostasis. We discuss how genetic defects affecting these pathways contribute to the development of type 1, type 2, monogenic, and gestational diabetes. We further explore their potential as therapeutic targets. Created in BioRender.

Experience of Identity Change in People Who Reported a Diagnosis of Multiple Sclerosis : A Qualitative Inquiry [PDF]

open access: yes, 2019
Background: A diagnosis of multiple sclerosis (MS) can lead to changes to a person’s sense of self. The aim of this study was to investigate the subjective experience of identity change and subsequent adjustment to MS.

Loss of proton‐sensing TDAG8 increases tumor progression in mouse models of colon cancer

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Loss of the pH‐sensing receptor TDAG8 accelerates colorectal cancer progression in mice. Animals lacking TDAG8 expression had increased tumor growth, DNA damage, and recruitment of tumor‐associated immune cells, including macrophages, neutrophils, and monocytes.

Circulating microRNA signatures of cachexia and cancer in Canis familiaris as a comparative oncology model for human disease

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Circulating microRNAs as biomarkers of cachexia and sex‐specific cancer in senior dogs. In 25 client‐owned dogs, four circulating miRNAs (miR‐15a, miR‐15b, miR‐16, miR‐140) were downregulated in cachexia, with miR‐16 the strongest individual biomarker (AUC = 0.899).

Primary Progressive Multiple Sclerosis Under Anti-TNFα Treatment: A Case Report

open access: yesJournal of Central Nervous System Disease, 2020
Antagonists of tumour necrosis factor α (TNFα) are a common therapeutic choice for autoimmune diseases. Although they are effective and relatively safe, an increasing number of immune-mediated adverse events have been reported.
