A Modular Generative Approach for Realistic River Deltas: When L-Systems and cGANs Meet

open access: yesIEEE Access, 2022
Procedural terrain generation aims to create topographically coherent landscapes with realistic terrain features. Realistic landscapes of our blue planet are not complete without river deltas; however, there is an insufficient advancement in the ...

Combining transient dynamics and logistic‐asymptotic growth to study the recovery of two seabird populations after rat eradication

open access: yesPopulation Ecology, EarlyView.
This study examines the demographic dynamics of two seabird populations on Tromelin Island, 15 years after the eradication of brown rats. The results indicate that these populations are in good health and are expected to continue growing until breeding sites are saturated in about a century.

Towards Urban Digital Twins: A Workflow for Procedural Visualization Using Geospatial Data

open access: yesRemote Sensing
A key feature for urban digital twins (DTs) is an automatically generated detailed 3D representation of the built and unbuilt environment from aerial imagery, footprints, LiDAR, or a fusion of these.

Geographic variation in walking activity in the red flour beetle Tribolium castaneum

open access: yesPopulation Ecology, EarlyView.
This study examined whether there is geographic variation in field populations, focusing on the moving activity in the red flour beetle Tribolium castaneum. Results showed significant differences in moving activity among field populations but no correlation with latitude or meteorological factors.

Shortest Walk in a Dungeon Graph

open access: yesProceedings of the International Florida Artificial Intelligence Research Society Conference
With games like No Man’s Sky and Diablo IV, procedural generation of content in games is ever-increasing. Heuristics are needed to assess the goodness of generated content.

Ecologically Sound Procedural Generation of Natural Environments

open access: yesInternational Journal of Computer Games Technology, 2017
Current techniques for the creation and exploration of virtual worlds are largely unable to generate sound natural environments from ecological data and to provide interactive web-based visualizations of such detailed environments.

occumb: An R package for site occupancy modeling of eDNA metabarcoding data

open access: yesPopulation Ecology, EarlyView.
This study introduces a new R package, occumb, for the convenient application of site occupancy modeling using environmental DNA (eDNA) metabarcoding data. We outline a data analysis workflow, including data setup, model fitting, model assessment, and comparison of potential study settings based on model predictions, all of which can be performed using

Making tau amyloid models in vitro: a crucial and underestimated challenge

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
This review highlights the challenges of producing in vitro amyloid assemblies of the tau protein. We review how accurately the existing protocols mimic tau deposits found in the brain of patients affected with tauopathies. We discuss the important properties that should be considered when forming amyloids and the benchmarks that should be used to ...

Procedural generation of semantically plausible small-scale towns

open access: yesGraphical Models, 2023
Procedural techniques have been successfully utilized for generating various kinds of 3D models. In this study, we propose a procedural method to build 3D towns that can be manipulated by a set of high-level semantic principles namely security, privacy ...

Protonophore activity of short‐chain fatty acids induces their intracellular accumulation and acidification

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
The protonated form of butyrate, as well as other short‐chain fatty acids (SCFAs), is membrane permeable. In acidic extracellular environments, this can lead to intracellular accumulation of SCFAs and cytosolic acidification. This phenomenon will be particularly relevant in acidic environments such as the large intestine or tumor microenvironments ...
