Are Emotions Perceptions of Value (and Why this Matters)? [PDF]

open access: yes
In Emotions, Values & Agency, Christine Tappolet develops a sophisticated, perceptual theory of emotions and their role in wide range of issues in value theory and epistemology.

Women Veterans Profile [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
Women veterans are the fastest growing segment of the veteran community. In 2013, about 2.2 million (or 10 percent) of the nation’s nearly 22 million veterans were women. This number is projected to increase to 2.4 million by 2020.

Fast search of sequences with complex symbol correlations using profile context-sensitive HMMS and pre-screening filters [PDF]

open access: yes, 2007
Recently, profile context-sensitive HMMs (profile-csHMMs) have been proposed which are very effective in modeling the common patterns and motifs in related symbol sequences.

Gut microbiome and aging—A dynamic interplay of microbes, metabolites, and the immune system

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Age‐dependent shifts in microbial communities engender shifts in microbial metabolite profiles. These in turn drive shifts in barrier surface permeability of the gut and brain and induce immune activation. When paired with preexisting age‐related chronic inflammation this increases the risk of neuroinflammation and neurodegenerative diseases.

Impact of dicarboxystilbene impurities on the properties of swift heavy ion latent tracks in PET films

open access: yesOptical Materials: X
We present a new hypothesis and supporting experimental evidence about the essential role played by small impurities of dicarboxystilbene in the process of UV treatment of PET films irradiated with swift heavy ions (SHI). This treatment both forms highly

A methionine‐lined active site governs carbocation stabilization and product specificity in a bacterial terpene synthase

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
This study reveals a unique active site enriched in methionine residues and demonstrates that these residues play a critical role by stabilizing carbocation intermediates through novel sulfur–cation interactions. Structure‐guided mutagenesis further revealed variants with significantly altered product profiles, enhancing pseudopterosin formation. These

Diversity and complexity in neural organoids

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Neural organoid research aims to expand genetic diversity on one side and increase tissue complexity on the other. Chimeroids integrate multiple donor genomes within single organoids. Self‐organising multi‐identity organoids, exogenous cell seeding, or enforced assembly of region‐specific organoids contribute to tissue complexity.

Hyperosmotic stress induces PARP1‐mediated HPF1‐dependent mono(ADP‐ribosyl)ation

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Sorbitol‐induced hyperosmotic stress rapidly induces reversible mono(ADP‐ribosyl)ation (MARylation) on PARP1 without the signs of genotoxic signaling. We show that PARP1 autoMARylation is HPF1 dependent and forms hydroxylamine‐resistant O‐glycosidic linkages.
