Young versus aged microbiota transplants to germ-free mice: increased short-chain fatty acids and improved cognitive performance

open access: yesGut Microbes, 2020
Aging is associated with cognitive decline and decreased concentrations of short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) in the gut. SCFAs are significant in that they are protective to the gut and other organs.

The Detection of Propionate Utilization by Bacteria Isolated from a Plastic Recycling Site

open access: yesApplied Microbiology
(1) The study aims to utilize a reported approach for culturing mesophilic bacteria from a plastic waste environment; (2) The work revived mesophilic microbial population from an aged PET recycling site using a culture-based approach, and determined the ...

A Long-Chain Dextran Produced by Weissella cibaria Boosts the Diversity of Health-Related Gut Microbes Ex Vivo

open access: yesBiology
Long-chain dextrans are α-glucans that can be produced by lactic acid bacteria. NextDextTM, a specific long-chain dextran with a high degree of polymerisation, produced using Weissella cibaria, was recently shown to exert prebiotic potential in vitro. In

Scientific Opinion on the safety and efficacy of propionic acid, sodium propionate, calcium propionate and ammonium propionate for all animal species

open access: yesEFSA Journal, 2011
Abstract The maximum safe level of propionic acid for poultry is 10 g/kg complete feed, for pigs 30 g/kg complete feed. The corresponding safe concentrations in water for drinking would be 4 and 10 g/L, respectively. Ruminants show a high tolerance to propionic acid.

Analysis of propionate‐degrading consortia from agricultural biogas plants

open access: yesMicrobiologyOpen, 2016
In order to investigate the propionate‐degrading community of agricultural biogas plants, four propionate‐degrading consortia (Ap1a, N12, G12, and Wp2a) were established from different biogas plants which were fed with renewable resources.

Propionate of a microbiota metabolite induces cell apoptosis and cell cycle arrest in lung cancer

open access: yesMolecular Medicine Reports, 2019
Short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs; butyrate, propionate and acetate) are metabolites derived from the gut microbiota via dietary fiber fermentation. In colon cancer, treatment with SCFAs, mainly butyrate and propionate, suppresses cell proliferation ...

Efeito do tratamento com aditivos químicos e inoculantes bacterianos nas perdas e na qualidade de silagens de cana-de-açúcar Effect of chemical and bacterial additives on losses and quality of sugar cane silages

Impact of Short‐Chain Fatty Acids on Glucose, Fatty Acid and Leucine Metabolism in Primary Human Myotubes

open access: yesEndocrinology, Diabetes & Metabolism
Introduction Short‐chain fatty acids (SCFAs) are small molecule metabolites mainly produced during microbial fermentation of dietary fibre in the gut and have been shown to have a beneficial impact on human health.
