DNA-Functionalized, Bivalent Proteins*
Journal of the American Chemical Society, 2018Bivalent DNA conjugates of β-galactosidase (βGal), having pairs of oligonucleotides positioned closely on opposing faces of the protein, have been synthesized and characterized. These structures, due to their directional bonding characteristics, allow for the programmable access of one-dimensional protein materials.

Functions of the retinoblastoma protein
BioEssays, 1999The retinoblastoma protein (pRB) can both positively and negatively regulate transcription. The former correlates with its ability to promote differentiation and the latter with its ability to regulate entry into S-phase. pRB negatively regulates transcription by forming complexes with members of the E2F transcription factor family.

Protein Ubiquitylation and Synaptic Function
Annals of the New York Academy of Sciences, 2003Abstract: Conjugation of ubiquitin to proteins is a well‐established signal to regulate an ever expanding range of cellular processes. Here, we discuss recent findings that deeply link ubiquitin signaling to synaptic activity.

Proteins: Dynamics and Function
1988The focus in my paper changes from the genes to gene products, which are proteins. I will describe some of the results of theoretical methods that are used to understand the functioning of these gene products. Since there is no plan for a “human protein consortium,” I will restrict myself to describing what has been going on in this area.

Prediction of Protein Functions
2011The recent explosion in the number and diversity of novel proteins identified by the large-scale "omics" technologies poses new and important questions to the blossoming field of systems biology--what are all these proteins, how did they come about, and most importantly, what do they do? From a comparatively small number of protein structural domains a

Functional Mapping of Surfactant Protein A
Fetal and Pediatric Pathology, 2001Surfactant protein A (SP-A) is a highly ordered, oligomeric glycoprotein that is secreted into the airspaces of the lung by alveolar type II cells and Clara cells of the pulmonary epithelium. Although research has shown that SP-A is both a calcium-dependent phospholipid-binding protein that affects surfactant structure and function and a lectin that ...

This chapter evaluates the wide variety of ways that proteins support the structures and life processes of viruses, cells, and organisms. It begins by looking at structural proteins, enzymes and enzyme kinetics, and antibodies. The chapter then considers transmembrane transport proteins—including channels, gates, and pumps—and receptors, all embedded ...

Functional genomics with protein-protein interactions
2000Knowing the sequence of a gene does not mean knowing its function. Although, information stored at the DNA level can be used to predict biological processes, proteins are the final executors of the various response programs of a cell. Transient information, like posttranslational modifications or interactions among proteins, cannot be deduced from DNA ...
