Pathways to balance mitochondrial translation and protein import
Here, Priesnitz and Becker review the pathways that adjust mitochondrial protein synthesis and import of nuclear-encoded subunits to the assembly of respiratory chain complexes and outline how defects in protein import into mitochondria affect nuclear ...

ATAD1 prevents clogging of TOM and damage caused by un-imported mitochondrial proteins
Summary: Mitochondria require the constant import of nuclear-encoded proteins for proper functioning. Impaired protein import not only depletes mitochondria of essential factors but also leads to toxic accumulation of un-imported proteins outside the ...

Deletion of Mgr2p Affects the Gating Behavior of the TIM23 Complex
The TIM23 complex is a hub for translocation of preproteins into or across the mitochondrial inner membrane. This dual sorting mechanism is currently being investigated, and in yeast appears to be regulated by a recently discovered subunit, the Mgr2 ...

α-Synuclein binds TOM20 and inhibits mitochondrial protein import in Parkinson’s disease
The Parkinson’s disease–associated protein α-synuclein binds to the mitochondrial protein import receptor TOM20, which causes downstream impairment of mitochondrial function.

Mitochondrial protein import [PDF]
Transport of nuclear-encoded precursor proteins into mitochondria includes proteolytic cleavage of aminoterminal targeting sequences in the mitochondrial matrix. We have isolated the processing activity from Neurospora crassa.

An epithelial GPR35 isoform supports tumor‐associated transcriptional and metabolic phenotypes
GPR35 generates two functionally distinct isoforms with previously unresolved roles. GPR35‐short mediates immune‐cell chemotaxis, while GPR35‐long is enriched in colorectal cancer epithelium, where it supports increased metabolism, proliferation, and tumor‐associated transcriptional programs.

Major Changes in Plastid Protein Import and the Origin of the Chloroplastida
Summary: Core components of plastid protein import and the principle of using N-terminal targeting sequences are conserved across the Archaeplastida, but lineage-specific differences exist.

TRIM37, a novel E3 ligase for PEX5-mediated peroxisomal matrix protein import
Most proteins destined for the peroxisomal matrix depend on the peroxisomal targeting signals (PTSs), which require the PTS receptor PEX5, whose deficiency causes fatal human peroxisomal biogenesis disorders (PBDs).

Golgi enzymes are retrieved from the plasma membrane to the trans‐Golgi network
Golgi enzymes are traditionally considered resident proteins retained within the Golgi apparatus. Here, we demonstrate that a subset transiently reaches the cell surface and is subsequently retrieved to the trans‐Golgi network via retrograde transport. Using a nanobody‐based toolkit, we uncover a dynamic trafficking cycle of several Golgi enzymes.
