Production of tetrodotoxin in puffer fish embryos
Environmental Toxicology and Pharmacology, 1998It has been accepted that puffer fish accumulates tetrodotoxin through the food chain. This indicates that tetrodotoxin in puffer fish is exogenous. The present study, however, describes an endogenous origin of tetrodotoxin in puffer fish. For this purpose, the ovulated oocytes from puffer fish Fugu niphobles were artificially fertilized and cultivated.

Occurrence of saxitoxin in puffer fish
Toxicon, 1984Three species of puffer fish, Takifugu poecilonotus, T. vermicularis and T. radiatus, were examined for the presence of toxic components other than tetrodotoxin. Saxitoxin, a paralytic shellfish toxin, was found in the livers, ovaries and digestive tracts of the first two species but not in the last species.

Tetrodotoxin derivatives in puffer fish
Toxicon, 1985Analysis of puffer fish tissue extracts by a fluorometric tetrodotoxin analyzer revealed the presence of three tetrodotoxin derivatives besides tetrodotoxin. The derivatives were isolated and identified as tetrodonic acid, 4-epitetrodotoxin and anhydrotetrodotoxin on the basis of mass spectral and 1H NMR measurements.
