Blockade of P2X7 receptors preserves blood retinal barrier integrity by modulating the plasmalemma vesicle‐associated protein: Implications for diabetic retinopathy

open access: yesBritish Journal of Pharmacology, Volume 182, Issue 12, Page 2603-2620, June 2025.
Background and Purpose Plasmalemma vesicle‐associated protein (PLVAP) regulates transcytosis in vascular endothelial cells. PLVAP expression is increased in pathological conditions, such as diabetic retinopathy. P2X7 receptor antagonists have been shown to preserve blood‐retinal barrier (BRB) integrity.

Neural Metabolic Networks: Key Elements of Healthy Brain Function

open access: yesJournal of Neurochemistry, Volume 169, Issue 6, June 2025.
This review originated from the Fourth International Society for Neurochemistry (ISN) and Journal of Neurochemistry (JNC) Flagship School (2022). Here, we describe how the specific bioenergetic profiles and metabolic exchanges between brain cells enable and gate synaptic function and behavior. Then, based on this analysis, we discuss the potential role

Diet‐Induced Obesity Blunts Sensitivity of Intestinal Enteric Neurons: FIRST Evidence of Modulation of Activity of Enteric Neurons by Luminal Nutrients

open access: yesThe FASEB Journal, Volume 39, Issue 9, 15 May 2025.
The enteric nervous system (ENS) regulates critical physiological functions including gut motility, blood flow, and epithelial secretions. However, given the anatomical disadvantage of not contacting the lumen, its role in direct luminal sensing has been precluded.
