Mapping the evolution of mitochondrial complex I through structural variation

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Respiratory complex I (CI) is crucial for bioenergetic metabolism in many prokaryotes and eukaryotes. It is composed of a conserved set of core subunits and additional accessory subunits that vary depending on the organism. Here, we categorize CI subunits from available structures to map the evolution of CI across eukaryotes. Respiratory complex I (CI)

TUNABLE QUALITY FACTOR

open access: yes, 2014
The present disclosure relates to a wireless communication system configured to transforming the radiating mechanism of the antenna system in such a way to support different operating modes depending on the needs. In some examples, the wireless communication system comprises an antenna structure connected to a signal process unit. The antenna structure

On the Beam Profile and Beam Quality of Gain-Guided Index-Antiguided Fibers with Finite Cladding Boundary

open access: yes, 2011
The beam quality factor $M^2$ for the fundamental LP01 mode of a step-index fiber with a finite cladding diameter is calculated in the presence of gain, in a closed form, as a function of the complex generalized V-number.

Plasmodium falciparum gametogenesis essential protein 1 (GEP1) is a transmission‐blocking target

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
This study shows Plasmodium falciparum GEP1 is vital for activating sexual stages of malarial parasites even independently of a mosquito factor. Knockout parasites completely fail gamete formation even when a phosphodiesterase inhibitor is added. Two single‐nucleotide polymorphisms (V241L and S263P) are found in 12%–20% of field samples.

A Quasi-Spherical Fusion Reactor Burning Boron-11 Fuel

open access: yesPlasma
In this study, particle-in-cell (PIC) simulation was used to validate a conceptual design for a quasi-spherical, net power, hydrogen-plus-boron-11-fueled fusion reactor incorporating high-temperature superconducting (HTS) magnets.

4‐nitrobenzoate inhibits 4‐hydroxybenzoate polyprenyltransferase in malaria parasites and enhances atovaquone efficacy

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Atovaquone is an antimalarial requiring potentiation for sufficient efficacy. We pursued strategies to enhance its activity, showing that 4‐nitrobenzoate inhibits 4‐hydroxybenzoate polyprenyltransferase, decreasing ubiquinone biosynthesis. Since atovaquone competes with ubiquinol in mitochondria, 4‐nitrobenzoate facilitates its action, potentiating ...

Wave interference effect on polymer microstadium laser

open access: yes, 2007
We investigate the lasing modes in fully chaotic polymer microstadiums under optical pumping. The lasing modes are regularly spaced in frequency, and their amplitudes oscillate with frequency.

Linked dimers of the AAA+ ATPase Msp1 reveal energetic demands and mechanistic plasticity for substrate extraction from lipid bilayers

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Cells must clear mislocalized or faulty proteins from membranes to survive. The AAA+ ATPase Msp1 performs this task, but dissecting how its six subunits work together is challenging. We engineered linked dimers with varied numbers of functional subunits to reveal how Msp1 subunits cooperate and use energy to extract proteins from the lipid bilayer ...

Present Status of Air Filters and Exploration of Their New Applications

open access: yesKONA Powder and Particle Journal, 2018
There is an increasing demand of air filters with a high collection performance, i.e., high collection efficiency and low pressure drop, for the application to indoor air cleaning. Air filters consisting of nanofibers have attracted great interests since
