Facilitation at single synapses probed with optical quantal analysis

Nature Neuroscience, 2002
Many synapses can change their strength rapidly in a use-dependent manner, but the mechanisms of such short-term plasticity remain unknown. To understand these mechanisms, measurements of neurotransmitter release at single synapses are required. We probed transmitter release by imaging transient increases in [Ca(2+)] mediated by synaptic N-methyl-D ...

Specification Analysis for Quantal Choice Models

Transportation Science, 1979
This paper examines problems involved in the specification of the correct set of independent variables in choice models. The analytical approach is similar to Theil's use of auxiliary regressions in the case of standard linear models. The key conclusions are that the inclusion of superfluous independent variables does not affect the consistency of the

Quantal analysis of synaptic processes in the neocortex

Comptes Rendus de l'Académie des Sciences - Series III - Sciences de la Vie, 1998
The application of fluctuation analysis to studies of synaptic function in the neocortex is discussed. Analysis of failures of transmission has been valuable in indicating whether a presynaptic or a postsynaptic site is responsible for a change in synaptic efficacy. When combined with detailed ultrastructural verification of all synapses involved in an

Analysis of quantal content and quantal conductance in two populations of neurons in the avian ciliary ganglion

Neuroscience, 1987
The avian ciliary ganglion contains two populations of parasympathetic cells, termed the ciliary and choroid neurons. We have estimated the quantal contents of nicotinic excitatory postsynaptic potentials in both populations of neurons by several methods. The singly innervated ciliary neurons have quantal contents of 15-30.

Quantal analysis of synaptic transmission

1993
Abstract 1. Introduction Our understanding of the mechanisms underlying synaptic transmission owes much to the early mcasurcmenls and analysis of evoked and spontaneous synaptic potentials at neuromuscular junctions (1).

Quantal Analysis of Long-Term Potentiation

1988
Quantal analysis was performed on evoked EPSPs recorded from hippocampal neurones in in vivo (rabbit) and in in vitro (guinea pig) preparations. In one series of experiments double pulse stimulation was used. In two other series, test stimuli with low repetition rate were given at least for 15 min before and up to 60 min after short tetanic trains ...

A Mathematical Description of Quantal Analysis with Applications

1995
The work described here is predicated on a curious fact: transmission at chemical synapses is unreliable. How can we describe the distribution of postsynaptic responses? How does this distribution change as model synaptic parameters change?

Application of Quantal Analysis to Central Synapses

1993
The data reviewed in Chapter 7 showed that, despite the informative power of the quantum hypothesis, its application to the analysis of synaptic mechanisms at the vertebrate CNS was carried out only at the beginning when we started our studies of hippocampal plasticity.

Quantal Analysis of Postsynaptic Potentials (Literature Review)

1993
The results of the previous chapter did not allow elucidion of the mechanisms responsible for changes in synaptic efficacy during LTP. Therefore, more precise methods were necessary. The quantum hypothesis of synaptic transmission was mentioned in Section 6.1. The quantum hypothesis was formulated by Katz and his colleagues [260, 261, 331] on the basis

ITEM ANALYSIS BY SIMULTANEOUS QUANTAL AND QUANTITATIVE RESPONSES

British Journal of Mathematical and Statistical Psychology, 1965
The problem of selecting the best item is considered for cases arising when both a quantal and a quantitative response are available. Solutions are outlined for data obtained from either one or two groups. The basis of the solutions consists in ranking the items according to the significance level of a suitably chosen statistic which tests the ...
