Plasmodium falciparum malaria: rosettes are disrupted by quinine, artemisinin, mefloquine, primaquine, pyrimethamine, chloroquine and proguanil

open access: yesMemorias do Instituto Oswaldo Cruz, 1999
An assay was developed measuring the disruption of rosettes between Plasmodium falciparuminfected (trophozoites) and uninfected erythrocytes by the antimalarial drugs quinine, artemisinin mefloquine, primaquine, pyrimethamine, chloroquine and proguanil ...

Artemisinin: From Chinese Herbal Medicine to Modern Chemotherapy [PDF]

open access: yes, 2019
Malaria is a disease that has blighted humankind since early times. The first antimalarial treatment available to Europeans was the dried bark of the cinchona tree from Peru. The main problem in its use was adulteration by other material.

Drug poisonings following bariatric surgery: Case series report

open access: yesBritish Journal of Clinical Pharmacology, EarlyView.
Bariatric surgery alters gastrointestinal anatomy and physiology, which likely impacts upon oral medication absorption. Drug‐ and alcohol‐related deaths in this population are being increasingly reported; however, toxicological detail is lacking. Using data reported to the National Programme on Substance Use Mortality, we identified 18 deaths in people

Demethylation of Quinine Using Anhydrous Aluminium Trichloride

open access: yesJournal of Mathematical and Fundamental Sciences, 2013
Quinine is a natural alkaloid having a methoxy group bound to quinoline ring and an allyl group bound to quinuclidine ring. Demethylation of quinine applying strong acid such as HBr or HI at high temperature was unsuccessful. The aim of this research was

Quinine doped hybrid sol-gel coatings for wave guiding and optical applications [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
Pure and quinine doped silica coatings have been prepared over sodalime glasses. The coatings were consolidated at low temperature (range 60-180 A degrees C) preserving optical activity of quinine molecule.

Low‐dose cannabidiol increases plasma concentrations of amitriptyline: A clinical drug–drug interaction study

open access: yesBritish Journal of Clinical Pharmacology, EarlyView.
Abstract Aims Cannabidiol (CBD), the main non‐intoxicating compound from the cannabis plant, is regularly used by patients with chronic pain who also take analgesics. CBD has previously been shown to inhibit CYP‐mediated drug metabolism. This study aimed to characterize the potential pharmacokinetic interaction of CBD with amitriptyline and tramadol ...

Sentience in cephalopod molluscs: an updated assessment

open access: yesBiological Reviews, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT This article evaluates the evidence for sentience – the capacity to have feelings – in cephalopod molluscs: octopus, cuttlefish, squid, and nautilus. Our framework includes eight criteria, covering both whether the animal's nervous system could support sentience and whether their behaviour indicates sentience.

Quinine levels in patients with uncomplicated falciparum malaria in the Amazon region of Brazil

open access: yesBrazilian Journal of Infectious Diseases
We examined the plasmatic concentrations of quinine in patients with uncomplicated falciparum malaria in an endemic area of the Amazon region in Brazil in a prospective clinical trial, in which a standard three-day course of oral quinine plus doxycycline

Fluorescence Properties and Mg2+ Selectivity of Aryl‐Alkynyl Derivatives of the o‐Aminophenoltriacetate (APTRA) Ligand

open access: yesChemistry – A European Journal, EarlyView.
It is a challenge to improve the selectivity of high‐denticity ligands for Mg2+ over Ca2+. We show that in aryl‐alkynyl derivatives of APTRA, electron‐withdrawing substituents lower the binding affinity for Ca2+ more than Mg2+, making the ligand more selective for Mg2+.
