The ontogeny of exploratory behavior in male and female adolescent rats (Rattus norvegicus)

open access: yes, 2009
Supported by Wellcome Trust grant 078405/Z/05/ZDuring adolescence, rats gain independence from their mothers and disperse from the natal burrow, with males typically dispersing further than females. We predicted that, if dispersal patterns are associated

Dietary Choline Deprivation Exacerbates Kidney Injury in Streptozotocin-Induced Diabetes in Adult Rats

open access: yesDiabetology
Background: Choline (Ch) deprivation causes kidney injury and dysfunction, and diabetic nephropathy is also known to be a complication of diabetes; thus, this interplay could potentially aggravate diabetic kidney disease.

TRAIL‐PEG‐Apt‐PLGA nanosystem as an aptamer‐targeted drug delivery system potential for triple‐negative breast cancer therapy using in vivo mouse model

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Aptamers are used both therapeutically and as targeting agents in cancer treatment. We developed an aptamer‐targeted PLGA–TRAIL nanosystem that exhibited superior therapeutic efficacy in NOD/SCID breast cancer models. This nanosystem represents a novel biotechnological drug candidate for suppressing resistance development in breast cancer.

Molecular characterization of Cryptosporidium spp. from wild rats and mice from rural communities in the Philippines

open access: yes, 2013
In order to examine the prevalence of Cryptosporidium in wild rodents in the Philippines and understand the role wild rodents play in the transmission of this parasite to humans and livestock, 194 fecal samples from wild rats and mice from Luzon and ...

Sexual dimorphism in basal and post stress parameters of neuro-endocrine-immune complex, metabolome, electrocardiogram, and gastric mucosa at rats

open access: yesJournal of Education, Health and Sport
Introduction and aim. Previously, we found significant associations between sex index and a number of parameters of the neuro-endocrine-immune complex and metabolome.

Tumour–host interactions in Drosophila: mechanisms in the tumour micro‐ and macroenvironment

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
This review examines how tumour–host crosstalk takes place at multiple levels of biological organisation, from local cell competition and immune crosstalk to organism‐wide metabolic and physiological collapse. Here, we integrate findings from Drosophila melanogaster studies that reveal conserved mechanisms through which tumours hijack host systems to ...

Dimethyl fumarate combined with cisplatin at subcytotoxic doses sensitizes cervical cancer toward ferroptosis and apoptosis through GSH restriction and p53 (re)activation

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Dimethyl fumarate (DMF) reduces growth of HPV‐positive cervical cancer spheroids and induces ferroptosis in cervical cancer cells via blocking SLC7A11/Glutathione (GSH) axis. Combination of subcytotoxic doses of DMF and cisplatin (CDDP) further suppresses spheroid growth and drives cell death in 2D culture models.

Age-related changes in kidney function in female pigmented Royal College of Surgeons (RCS) rats

open access: yes, 2000
The Royal College of Surgeons (RCS) rat is an established animal model used to study human retinal dystrophies. This study investigated whether kidney dysfunction accompanies the eye abnormalities seen in this model. Overnight urine collection procedures
