Plasma‐Activated Hydrogels for Microbial Disinfection

open access: yesAdvanced Science, 2023
A continuous risk from microbial infections poses a major environmental and public health challenge. As an emerging strategy for inhibiting bacterial infections, plasma‐activated water (PAW) has proved to be highly effective, environmental‐friendly, and ...

The Ion Channels Involved in Oxidative Stress-Related Gastrointestinal Diseases

open access: yesOxygen, 2023
The pathogenesis of various gastrointestinal (GI) disorders, including gastritis, ulcers, inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and cancer, can be linked to oxidative stress.

A Review of Cold Atmospheric Pressure Plasmas for Trauma and Acute Care

open access: yesFrontiers in Physics, 2021
Despite the high overall survival rates of severely injured military and civilian personnel requiring trauma and acute care, the challenges of treating infections and healing-resistant wounds have grown. Exposure to unknown environmental pathogens at the

Bioimaging Probes for Reactive Oxygen Species and Reactive Nitrogen Species

open access: yesJournal of Clinical Biochemistry and Nutrition, 2009
Reactive oxygen species (ROS) play key roles in many pathogenic processes, including carcinogenesis, inflammation, ischemia-reperfusion injury and signal transduction. Also, reactive nitrogen species (RNS) cause various biological events such as neurodegenerative disorders.

Physiological and pathophysiological role of reactive oxygen species and reactive nitrogen species in the kidney [PDF]

open access: yesClinical and Experimental Pharmacology and Physiology, 2018
SummaryEnd‐stage renal disease is a leading cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide. The prevalence of the disease and the number of patients who receive renal replacement therapy are expected to increase in the next decade. Accumulating evidence suggests that chronic hypoxia in the tubulointerstitium represents the final common pathway to end‐stage

Gut microbiome and aging—A dynamic interplay of microbes, metabolites, and the immune system

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Age‐dependent shifts in microbial communities engender shifts in microbial metabolite profiles. These in turn drive shifts in barrier surface permeability of the gut and brain and induce immune activation. When paired with preexisting age‐related chronic inflammation this increases the risk of neuroinflammation and neurodegenerative diseases.

Reactive Oxygen Species in Stem Cells [PDF]

open access: yesOxidative Medicine and Cellular Longevity, 2015
Stem cells are defined by their unique ability to self-renew and their multipotent differentiation capacity, thus maintaining tissue homeostasis throughout the life of a multicellular organism. Stem cells reside in niches characterized by hypoxia and low reactive oxygen species (ROS), both of which are critical for maintaining the potential for self ...

Hyperosmotic stress induces PARP1‐mediated HPF1‐dependent mono(ADP‐ribosyl)ation

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Sorbitol‐induced hyperosmotic stress rapidly induces reversible mono(ADP‐ribosyl)ation (MARylation) on PARP1 without the signs of genotoxic signaling. We show that PARP1 autoMARylation is HPF1 dependent and forms hydroxylamine‐resistant O‐glycosidic linkages.

Quantification of Nitric Oxide Concentration Using Single-Walled Carbon Nanotube Sensors

open access: yesNanomaterials, 2021
Nitric oxide (NO), a free radical present in biological systems, can have many detrimental effects on the body, from inflammation to cancer. Due to NO’s short half-life, detection and quantification is difficult. The inability to quantify NO has hindered

A Case of Mistaken Identity: Are Reactive Oxygen Species Actually Reactive Sulfide Species? [PDF]

open access: yesThe FASEB Journal, 2016
Stepwise one‐electron reduction of oxygen to water produces reactive oxygen species (ROS), namely peroxide (H 2 O 2 ), superoxide (O 2 .− ) and the hydroxyl radical (HO .−
