Reconstructing enzyme evolution by protein engineering

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Natural enzyme evolution can be retraced by protein engineering methods such as directed evolution, rational design, and ancestral sequence reconstruction. These approaches reveal how enzymes emerged from ligand‐binding scaffolds, developed varying substrate preferences, formed oligomeric complexes, adapted to environmental changes, and evolved novel ...

Bioenergetics and Reactive Nitrogen Species in Bacteria

open access: yesInternational Journal of Molecular Sciences, 2022
The production of reactive nitrogen species (RNS) by the innate immune system is part of the host’s defense against invading pathogenic bacteria. In this review, we summarize recent studies on the molecular basis of the effects of nitric oxide and peroxynitrite on microbial respiration and energy conservation.

Investigating transcription factor dynamics in health and disease using FRAP

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
FRAP analysis of GFP‐tagged transcription factors reveals how molecular mobility and target engagement change in response to drug treatment. By combining live‐cell imaging, quantitative model fitting, and statistical analysis, this approach uncovers transcription factor dynamics linked to disease mechanisms, providing a powerful framework for ...

Influenza A hemagglutinin virus-like particles confer protection against influenza B virus infection

open access: yesEmerging Microbes and Infections
Influenza A hemagglutinin (HA), neuraminidase, and/or M2e-containing virus-like particles (VLPs) induce immune responses that contribute to protection against multiple influenza A virus subtypes.

Activation of Murine Immune Cells upon Co-culture with Plasma-treated B16F10 Melanoma Cells

open access: yesApplied Sciences, 2019
Recent advances in melanoma therapy increased median survival in patients. However, death rates are still high, motivating the need of novel avenues in melanoma treatment.

Microbiome‐blood–brain barrier interactions in aging — mechanisms and therapeutic potential

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Aging reshapes the gut microbiome (↓SCFA‐producing commensals; ↑pro‐inflammatory outputs), shifting circulating metabolites (↓SCFAs; ↑LPS, ↑TMAO, ↑PAA) that act at the BBB to increase nonspecific transcytosis, alter transport, and promote astrocyte reactivity, heightening brain vulnerability.

The impact of radicals in cold atmospheric plasma on the structural modification of gap junction: a reactive molecular dynamics study

open access: yesInternational Journal of Smart and Nano Materials, 2019
Cold atmospheric plasmas are currently gaining increasing attention for cancer therapy. However, very limited studies regarding the interaction mechanisms between plasma species and tissues are available.

An epithelial GPR35 isoform supports tumor‐associated transcriptional and metabolic phenotypes

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
GPR35 generates two functionally distinct isoforms with previously unresolved roles. GPR35‐short mediates immune‐cell chemotaxis, while GPR35‐long is enriched in colorectal cancer epithelium, where it supports increased metabolism, proliferation, and tumor‐associated transcriptional programs.

Inhaled microcystin-LR may induce acute liver failure through hepatic congestion

open access: yesEcotoxicology and Environmental Safety
As cyanobacteria growth increases due to climate change, health issues resulting from exposure to microcystin-leucine-arginine (MC-LR), a toxin produced by cyanobacteria, are becoming a pressing public health concern.
