Acetylcholine-treated murine dendritic cells promote inflammatory lung injury [PDF]
In recent years a non-neuronal cholinergic system has been described in immune cells, which is often usually activated during the course of inflammatory processes. To date, it is known that Acetylcholine (ACh), a neurotransmitter extensively expressed in

A Tac1‐Expressing Brainstem Pathway Underlies the Pathogenesis of Trigeminal Neuralgia
A critical TG‐Sp5CTac1‐PBNTac1 pathway drives trigeminal neuropathic pain (TNP). Tac1‐expressing parabrachial nucleus (PBNTac1) neurons exhibit heightened responses to innocuous stimuli in TNP, and chemogenetic inhibition of these neurons effectively prevents TNP development.

Paying attention to smell: Cholinergic signaling in the olfactory bulb.
The tractable, layered architecture of the olfactory bulb (OB), and its function as a relay between odor input and higher cortical processing, makes it an attractive model to study how sensory information is processed at a synaptic and circuit level. The

Lesions of cholinergic pedunculopontine tegmental nucleus neurons fail to affect cocaine or heroin self-administration or conditioned place preference in rats. [PDF]
Cholinergic input to the ventral tegmental area (VTA) is known to contribute to reward. Although it is known that the pedunculopontine tegmental nucleus (PPTg) provides an important source of excitatory input to the dopamine system, the specific role of ...

Neuropathic pain affects about 7–8% of the population, and its management still poses challenges with unmet needs. Over the past decades, researchers have explored the cholinergic system (muscarinic and nicotinic acetylcholine receptors: mAChR and nAChR)

Sleep-wake sensitive mechanisms of adenosine release in the basal forebrain of rodents : an in vitro study [PDF]
Adenosine acting in the basal forebrain is a key mediator of sleep homeostasis. Extracellular adenosine concentrations increase during wakefulness, especially during prolonged wakefulness and lead to increased sleep pressure and subsequent rebound sleep.

Despite widespread exposure, the mechanisms of manganese neurotoxicity remain poorly understood. Using correlative cryogenic fluorescence and synchrotron X‐ray fluorescence imaging techniques, we show that the Golgi apparatus is the primary accumulation site for manganese in both neurons and astrocytes, and that manganese targets the neuronal ...

Role of the thalamic parafascicular nucleus cholinergic system in the modulation of acute corneal nociception in rats [PDF]
The present study investigated the effects of microinjections of acetylcholine (a cholinergic agonist), physostigmine (a cholinesterase inhibitor), atropine (an antagonist of muscarinic cholinergic receptors) and hexamethonium (an antagonist of nicotinic

Cholinergic Modulation of Locomotion and Striatal Dopamine Release Is Mediated by α6α4* Nicotinic Acetylcholine Receptors [PDF]
Dopamine (DA) release in striatum is governed by firing rates of midbrain DA neurons, striatal cholinergic tone, and nicotinic ACh receptors (nAChRs) on DA presynaptic terminals.

Gain-of-function mutations in the UNC-2/CaV2α channel lead to excitation-dominant synaptic transmission in C. elegans [PDF]
Mutations in pre-synaptic voltage gated calcium channels can lead to familial hemiplegic migraine type 1 (FHM1). While mammalian studies indicate that the migraine brain is hyperexcitable due to enhanced excitation or reduced inhibition, the molecular ...
