IgG immune complexes are of central importance in the humoral immune system and strongly implicated in the pathogenesis of hematologic and rheumatic autoimmune disorders. Cross-linking of receptors for the Fc domain of IgG antibodies (FcgammaRs) triggers a wide variety of effector functions including phagocytosis, antibody-dependent cellular ...

Antigen recognition by cells of the immune system occurs via many mechanisms. One important family of receptors involved in the recognition of immunoglobulin (Ig) coated particles and complexes are Fc receptors. Fc receptors recognize the Fc portion of Ig and are accordingly grouped into subfamilies. They are named depending upon which class of Ig they

Advances in our understanding of the molecular structure of Fc receptors have been made at a rapid pace. Details of how Fc receptors are involved in cell triggering, e.g. allergic mediator release from mast cells, and IgE synthesis are also continuing to be elucidated, although much work is still required.

In the early 1970s, soon after the discovery of Fc receptors on lymphocytes, molecules binding antigen-complexed IgG were detected in culture supernatants of mouse activated T cells and called IgG-binding factors (IgG-BF). These IgG-BF were hypothesized to be derived from membrane FcγR and to correspond to soluble forms of these receptors.
