Anti‐inflammatory effects of physical stimuli: The central role of networks in shaping the future of pharmacological research

open access: yesBritish Journal of Pharmacology, EarlyView.
Addressing complexity in the study of life sciences through Systems Biology and Systems Medicine has been transformative, making Systems Pharmacology the next logical step. In this review, we focus on physical stimuli, whose potential in pharmacology has been neglected, despite demonstrated therapeutic properties.

Effects of ATPM-ET, a novel κ agonist with partial μ activity, on physical dependence and behavior sensitization in mice [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
Aim: To investigate the effects of ATPM-ET [(−)-3-N-Ethylaminothiazolo [5,4-b]-N-cyclopropylmethylmorphinan hydrochloride] on physical dependence and behavioral sensitization to morphine in mice.

Crosstalk Between Kappa Opioid and Dopamine Systems in Compulsive Behaviors

open access: yesFrontiers in Pharmacology, 2020
The strength of goal-oriented behaviors is regulated by midbrain dopamine neurons. Dysfunctions of dopaminergic circuits are observed in drug addiction and obsessive-compulsive disorder.

kappa-Opioid receptors also increase potassium conductance. [PDF]

open access: yesProceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, 1993
Decrease of calcium conductance induced by opioid agonists has been reported by others for mu-, delta-, and kappa-opioid receptors. On the other hand, only mu- and delta-opioid receptors have been reported to increase potassium conductance. Intracellular recordings were made from guinea pig substantia gelatinosa neurons in a brain slice.

Is there a role for cannabidiol in obesity, metabolic syndrome and binge eating?

open access: yesBritish Journal of Pharmacology, EarlyView.
Cannabidiol (CBD) is one of the most abundant phytocannabinoids isolated from the Cannabis sativa plant. CBD is a lipophilic, non‐intoxicating substance that differently from Δ9‐tetrahydrocannabinol (Δ9‐THC) does not present the typical profile of a drug of abuse.

The atomistic level structure for the activated human κ-opioid receptor bound to the full Gi protein and the MP1104 agonist [PDF]

open access: yes, 2020
The kappa opioid receptor (κOR) is an important target for pain therapeutics to reduce depression and other harmful side effects of existing medications.

Prospects for Creation of Cardioprotective and Antiarrhythmic Drugs Based on Opioid Receptor Agonists [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
It has now been demonstrated that the μ, δ(1), δ(2), and κ(1) opioid receptor (OR) agonists represent the most promising group of opioids for the creation of drugs enhancing cardiac tolerance to the detrimental effects of ischemia/reperfusion (I/R ...

Novel approaches for drug development against chronic primary pain: A systematic review

open access: yesBritish Journal of Pharmacology, EarlyView.
Abstract Chronic primary pain (CPP) persisting for more than 3 months, associated with significant emotional distress without any known underlying cause, is an unmet medical need. Traditional or adjuvant analgesics do not provide satisfactory pain relief for a great proportion of these patients.

Opioid modulation of GABA release in the rat inferior colliculus [PDF]

open access: yes, 2004
Background: The inferior colliculus, which receives almost all ascending and descending auditory signals, plays a crucial role in the processing of auditory information.

Cortical kappa opioid receptors integrate negative affect and sleep disturbance

open access: yesTranslational Psychiatry
Sleep disruption and negative affect are attendant features of many psychiatric and neurological conditions that are often co-morbid including major depressive disorder, generalized anxiety disorder and chronic pain.
