2004The first part of this chapter briefly reviews the studies leading to identification of mammalian and nonmammalian tachykinins, and of their multiple receptors. The second part deals with the issue of nomenclature. This was first addressed in 1984 during a IUPHAR Satellite Meeting held in Maidstone.

In the peripheral nervous system, tachykinins released from peripheral endings of sensory nerves are responsible for the neurogenic inflammation phenomenon.
